Independent candidate for state Auditor submits final qualifying signatures to Somerville City Clerk and Boston Registrar of Voters
26 Jul 2006
The Wilson for Working Families campaign has collected over 9,000 signatures on nominating petitions from registered voters, qualifying Rand Wilson as a candidate for state Auditor well before the August 1 deadline. Only 5,000 valid signatures from voters are needed to secure a spot on the November ballot.

Carrying the petitions in a huge can of "Spinach for Democracy," Rand Wilson turned in the final 2,300 nominating signatures to the Somerville City Clerk and the Boston Registrar of Voters on Wednesday, July 26.

Wilson, a long-time union organizer and political activist, is running under the new "Working Families" political designation and is using his campaign to promote passage of the Ballot Freedom initiative, or Question 2.

"This is no symbolic protest candidacy," said Wilson. "I'm running to build support for a new Working Families Party in Massachusetts that will refocus the political agenda on the bread-and-butter economic issues that both of the major political parties have too often ignored."

"And I'm doing it now because the Mass Ballot Freedom Campaign has put Question 2 on the ballot this fall," Wilson added. "Voting YES on Question 2 will strengthen the vote of every single citizen in the Commonwealth. The way I see it, Question 2 is like Spinach for Democracy. It makes your vote stronger, and it's good for you."

If passed Question 2 would lift the prohibition against "cross-endorsement" voting, allowing independent, issue-based parties - like a potential Working Families Party - to support major-party candidates on a separate ballot line.

Wilson recently received endorsements from the United Electrical Workers Northeast Region, Local 1365 of the Communications Workers of America, and the Political Action Committee of ACORN (the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now).

A campaign kickoff event is planned for 6:00 PM on August 1 at Orleans Restaurant, 65 Holland Avenue in Somerville.

Sorry, I don't vote for democrats
26 Jul 2006
I don't vote for Democrats, or Democrat union bureaucrats trying to dress up as a labor party.

This whole "working families party" is a cynical charade and a fraud on the working class. Vote for a "working families" dogcatcher, and a mass-murderer Democrat imperialist president on the same ticket!

We need a labor party with a socialist program, politically and organizationally independent of the bosses parties.
