Small town invaded by Earth First! to save old growth!

On Feb 19th Earth First! activists from all over the state invaded the quaint town of Westminster. They descended upon Wachusett Mountain, home to the states largest stands of old growth forest and a very successful ski area that is planning on destroyin over 2000 trees to expand the size of their ski opperation. The Earth First!ers drummed, chanted and danced there way into the hearts and minds of many rich skiers who lined the streets waiting for there turn to hit the slopes on one of the busiest days of the year for the ski area.
At around 10 a.m. 30 EF!ers occupied a traffic island at the entrance to the ski area. To celebrate the holiday, some dressed up as presidents. One protester stood on a 4-foot high snow bank dressed as Dubya himself. A sign hung around his neck read, “Lets not beat around the Bush, save the trees”. Others played drums and chanted. Many of the skiers had no idea what to think of it and sent us warm gestures mainly consisting of the middle finger. Others at one point read a flyer and talked to us and ended up getting back in to their cars and drove home. Some locals showed their solidarity by driving by and honking and giving us waves, happy to see someone standing up to the proposed expansion that will ruin more land and kill more wildlife in the area.
Things became intense when 2 squad cars arrived, they even sent out the police chief himself to see what was going on.
At around 1 p.m. the group took to the streets with drums and signs and a lot of energy. The police thought that we where done for the day as we headed off up the hill. Ten minutes later we marched in to the parking lot and right up to the front doors to the ski lodge. We had ourselves a three-minute dance party with music from the marching band as spectators looked on. The police eventually pushed us off the property. Two minutes later we where back dancing, this time at the ski patrol building. Finally taking the hint, the ski patrol blocked off the rest of the entrances to the slopes.
Next we got the pleasure of running into the President of the ski area. While walking to the visitors center, he drove along side of us and asked us if we wanted to meet with him in a “more professional manner”. We told him that we where going to the Wachusett State Visitors Center and that he could meet us there. He agreed and began to drive away only to be stopped by a well-spoken gentleman from Maine. He asked if Jeff (the prez of WMA) would give us a ride. He replied by saying something along the lines that we gave him hell and that he couldn’t do that. As we pressed further, he allowed us to climb in the back so some of us got a free ride to the top.
At the top we debated and discussed the greedy plans to destroy public land for private profit. We talked about how the expansion of the ski area into the buffer zone of the old growth forest would kill wildlife, and eventually mean the death of the largest stand in the Commonwealth. He decided that a half-hour of debating us was going no place and said that we would have to agree to disagree. We said that that was not the answer and that we thought he had to agree to concede.
All in all it was an interesting day in the town of Westminster. This is certainly not the last time Wachusett Mountain Associates will have to face the music. Join the fun by contacting takeaction2001 (at) hotmail.com

visit the Wachsuett Ski area site at Wachusett.com. there is a chat area that you can use.

Boycott the Wachusett ski area, and Polar/ Adirondack/ Cape Cod Beverages because they are all owned by the rich and well conected Crowley family who is planning the destruction.

More on What You Can Do
20 Feb 2001
Also, you can ask the Boston Museum of Science (e-mail: information (at) mos.org) why they are so cozy with WMA. Yesterday the Museum's van went up to the lodge during the demo. A few weeks ago, the MOS hosted WMA for an "educational" event (did I hear GREENWASHING?) about how ecologically conscious the slope operators are. Please ask the MOS why they are supporting a private, profit-making outfit that is poised to create some ecological havoc on PUBLIC LAND.
