10 Jul 2007
The New England Culture Fest is the nation’s premiere festival for fair trade, complete with world class music from jazz, rock, hip-hop to reggae and world - along with a fair trade fashion show featuring conscious fashions from around the world, and an ethical interactive art & biz fair featuring green leaders, innovative organizations and local artisans- - and when night falls- huge video projections will cover the mill buildings of Historic Downtown Lowell, Massachusetts.
This dynamic benefit event unites Historic Lowell’s past of labor advocacy with the present day struggle to stomp out poverty and inequity.

The New England Culture Fest is the globe's premiere music festival for fair trade courtesy of Second World (Media, Music and Art for a Better World)! Held on September 1, 2007 in the historic cobblestoned Artist District of beautiful Downtown Lowell, Massachusetts, the New England Culture Fest is the ultimate festival experience bursting with sights, sounds, and scents of distant lands. This annual day-long art and music festival will feature world-class world music, interactive video installations, ethnic cuisine, Culture Fest Ethical Art and Business Expo, and lots of surprise in-crowd performances. When night falls, brace yourself for live video installation art to cover the surrounding historic mill buildings. And if that was not enough The Fashionably Fair runway show will feature ethical fashion from around the globe.

Culture Fest will feature artists who are representative of the spirit of this event and fit the sound of the world class festival, advocating for fair trade initiatives around the globe! Culture Fest performers use their music to send a message at this dynamic event. The festival features local, regional and national performers in genres including R&B, reggae, Latin, funk, world music and more. Last year's Culture Fest performers included The Boston Horns, Billboard Latin artist Marta Gomez, Balla Tounkara and Group Spirit and many, many more. This event is heavily promoted and marketed by television, radio, print, news articles, e-marketing and even a documentary production of the event itself.

This year's Culture Fest will continue to provide exciting entertainment for all ages and musical tastes, plus a variety of food, shopping and advocacy for empowerment initiatives worldwide. Culture Fest is the finale of the Summer season! Sponsors include Green Mountain Coffee, Organic Valley and Oxfam America.

The New England Culture Fest (NECF) BACKGROUND

The New England Culture Fest (NECF) is the nation's premier festival for fair trade, drawing its roots from interactive events dating back to 1998. The event is a fundraiser and builds awareness around critical social issues in an engaging and stimulating manner, combining film, music, fashion and art. With a projected attendance of 5,000+, the local/New England audience gets involved to make a difference: by participating in a series of events designed to entertain, educate and engage attendees in the ongoing discourse concerning issues related to poverty, cultural awareness and fair trade worldwide. Second World, a dynamic 501 (c) 3 arts and development organization, supports and develops initiatives empowering small cooperatives of artisans from around the globe as well as educational programs locally.

In terms of immediacy and relevancy, the NECF responds to the growing call for a gathering place for an increasing number of New England businesses and social entrepreneurs thinking globally and acting locally. Furthermore, the NECF provides a crucial link between ethical awareness and community involvement and visibility.

The NECF highlights world class names in entertainment such as The Boston Horns, renowned Senegalese Mamadou Diop, Billboard Award winning Marta Gomez, Marcia Higgs (daughter to reggae music legend Joe Higgs) the fifteen piece power house The Boston Afro Beat Society, internationally known Balla Tounkara and the acclaimed Juanito Pascual Flamenco Quartet to name a few. This year there will be exciting events added to the roster, including our Ethical Art and Biz Expo featuring one hundred of the region’s most talented artisans and dynamic businesses, and our crowd favorite fashion show celebrating the "Fashionably Fair" advocacy program fusing fashion and fair trade in a stunning display of sustainable styles from as far away as the United Kingdom and India.
