Defend Amber Abreu!
Drop All the Charges Now!

For Free Abortion on Demand!

On 6 January 2007, 18-year-old Amber Abreu went to
the hospital in Lawrence, Mass. after trying to terminate
an unwanted pregnancy by taking a drug that is a
component of the abortion pill RU-486. The result was a
miscarriage. Thereupon, the authorities dug up an
archaic law dating back to the 1840s (!) to charge the
teenager with "procuring a miscarriage." Amber was
arrested and thrown into a maximum security prison in
Framingham, where she was held for days until friends
and relatives could come up with $15,000 bail. A year
later, Abreu, an immigrant from the Dominican Republic,
faces seven years in prison on this outrageous charge.

The Internationalist Group and a growing defense
campaign insist: Amber Abreu is innocent! The
proceedings against her are a sinister frame-up aimed at
ruining the life of this working-class immigrant.

Legally, the case is an abomination. In order to obtain
an indictment, the Lawrence district attorney presented a
string of false statements. According to the Eagle-Tribune
(4 January), "The first grand jury had been told, incorrectly,
that the use of misoprostol to induce an abortion is illegal,
that Abreu did not tell anyone at the hospital that she was
pregnant and had taken the pills, that the fetus had tested
positive for misoprostol (there is no known test for the drug),
and that she fled the hospital against the advice of doctors."

It was all false. But instead of dropping the trumped up
charges, last month the D.A. got a new grand jury to reindict
on the same accusation! Abreu's attorneys are calling for
the judge to dismiss the new indictment. A hearing on the
motion is scheduled for January 29. We urge supporters
of women's rights to turn out to defend Amber.

The attack on Amber Abreu is further eroding the legal
right to abortion. Her case shows that the struggle to
defend abortion rights can't be limited to affirming the
"right to choose." Even with "pro-choice" Democrats like
Mass. governor Deval Patrick, many poor and working-
class women have no choice. The Internationalist Group
calls for free abortion on demand!

Amber's case is an indictment of the "justice" system
as a racist apparatus designed to enforce the oppression
of workers, women, racial minorities and immigrants. We
have no faith in a "fair trial" from the bourgeois courts
that rubber-stamp racist deportations and the barbaric
death penalty. To defend Amber Abreu and the right to
abortion, we look to mobilize militant mass action backed
by the power of organized labor, independent of the
Democrats and Republicans.

En Massachusetts, una joven

7 a√Īos de prisi√≥n por
intentar un aborto . . .

¬°Paremos este
ultraje!

Protesta: 8:30 a.m., martes, 29 de enero

(la próxima audiencia para Amber Abreu)

Salem Superior Court

34 Federal St., Salem, MA

¬°Defendamos a Amber Abreu!
