Announcement :: War and Militarism
HOPE ≠ WAR
26 Jul 2009
Eight Years of War – How Many More?!!
Planning Meeting for October March and Rally
Wednesday, July 29, 7:00 p.m.
Encuentro 5, 33 Harrison Ave., 5th Floor, Chinatown, Boston
When President Obama was elected on a platform of HOPE, the American people expected him to wind down the Iraq war and settle the conflicts in Afghanistan and Israel/Palestine.
While he has made rhetorical gestures towards a new foreign policy, the reality on the ground is different. Pres. Obama has escalated the war in Afghanistan, increased drone strikes in Pakistan, and postponed withdrawal of troops from Iraq until 2012. At the same time, the American people are suffering with a serious recession, while hundreds of billions are given away to the same banks that caused the mess, and the military budget is further increased.
To build opposition to these war policies, we must be public and visible in our opposition to wars and militarism.
Therefore, United for Justice with Peace, Massachusetts Peace Action, and Stop the Wars Coalition urge all peace and justice organizations and activists to join together to organize a march and rally in Boston marking the anniversary of the Afghanistan war in October. Activists from Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Cape Cod are also participating in the planning of what promises to be a New England-wide regional mobilization. The tentative dates will be October 17 or 18 at either Copley Square, Government Center, or Boston Common.
The initial proposed list of slogans are the following.
Ground the Drones
Afghanistan: Obama’s Vietnam
Eight Years of War, How Many More?
U.S. Troops Out of Iraq and Afghanistan Now
End the Occupation of Palestine
U.S. Hands off Iran
Abolish Nuclear Weapons
Beyond War, Another Economy is Possible
Fund our Communities, Reduce the Military Budget
At this meeting, we will finalize the date and place of the action; edit and approve a call for the mobilization, starting from a draft which has been prepared by a committee; and form committees to address program; outreach; web presence; and logistics.
Activists outside of the Boston area are encouraged to join the meeting by conference call. Contact Cole Harrison (rozziecole (at) gmail.com) or Shelagh Foreman (shelagh (at) masspeaceaction.org) for the conference call number or for any other information.

Whenever I hear on world news about WAR in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq and other countries I feel deserted and sad for those lives, whether it is innocent or not, that has been wasted. Quick cash will never be enough to cover up all the damages in properties as well as the lives being taken by these wars. So I appeal to all citizens that we should help in resolving this war issue. As of now, we have many issues to attend on, one of this is world recession. I do believe that if we stop this war at once and prevail brotherhood all over the world, we can help and think as one to take back the progress in our economy.
