Barcelona squat rebuilds after resisting eviction attempt
08 Jun 2014
Modified: 08:26:45 PM
With all the awful things capitalism is doing to this planet, we must never forget to celebrate the victories we do achieve. A building in Barcelona, squatted for seventeen years, was recently attacked, evicted and partially demolished by police in late May. Four days of demonstrations, riots, and targeted direct actions throughout Spain and around Europe ensued. The people rose up and the city government gave up the eviction and destruction of the Can Vies squat.

Now, volunteers from the community are helping rebuild amid the burnt-out hull of wrecking equipment still located on the property.

Once more, solidarity and direct action get the goods -- viva anarquia!

As a whole, Spain continues to experience a strong resurgence in anarchist activism, neighborhood assemblies and grass roots solutions to problems caused by the economic crisis of 2008 and subsequently applied shock doctrine. Economic crises and disasters do not necessarily have to result in private corporations and mercenary armies taking control of public life, the people are fully capable of rising to the occasion.
