Worcester Group Responds to FBI Terror Alert

Worcester, MA ~ In lieu of the recent FBI and press spotlight on Worcester, organizers of the Jeff “Free” Luers solidarity event are holding a press conference at the main entrance to Elm Park, Russell Street, Worcester at 2 pm on Tuesday June 15th. Local organizers of this event will make a statement and respond to the FBI’s “eco-terror” alert.

Organizers remain committed to holding an Earth First! event in Worcester on June 18th.

“Despite the climate of fear being spun by the FBI and some media the event will be held and relocated to a more public venue to encourage the Worcester community to come see the film that has generated national attention. The FBI will go to great lengths to call Jeff an eco-terrorist and to position him at the top of an imaginary pyramid that will lash out at any target. The Worcester event is a good example of the kind of events people have done-community based, film screenings, a celebration of the things Jeff stands for. He appreciates their solidarity and the aid offered by the 26 other events held worldwide.” said Dylan Kay of the Free “Free” Now Campaign.

This event is being held to raise support funds for Jeff “Free” Luers who is currently serving an outrageous sentence of 22 years and 8 months in Oregon State Penitentiary and to educate about local environmental degradation. It is ridiculous that Worcester’s plans to show the Australian documentary “Green With A Vengeance” was seen by the FBI as a warning sign for “terrorist activities”. Most recently local activists have sought to focus attention on the loss of the last remaining old growth forests on the East Coast. These important woodlands include old growth on Mt. Wachusett that continues to be destroyed by the expansion of the ski area. Important issues such as this severely affect the community and need to be addressed in a positive manner.

Glad to see you all responded to that--it's really important to address some of these smears head-on and not let the feds define activists concerned about Free's outrageous sentence as criminals or terrorists. Did the press conference get covered?

(One small grammar note, though: "in lieu of" means "instead of." I think that you meant "in light of").
