Ilan Pappe: Zionism and the Creation of the Biggest Prison on Earth

Pappe has been called “Israel’s bravest, most principled, most incisive historian” - John Pilger

Speaking on Zionism and the Creation of ‘The Biggest Prison on Earth’ Ilan Pappe is a peace activist and one of the leading Israeli ‘new historians’ who have been re-writing the history of Israel’s founding in 1948. The expulsion of more than 700,000 Palestinians was the subject of his 2008 path-breaking volume, The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine. Among his dozen books is his recently published (2017)

The Biggest Prison on Earth: a History of the Occupied Territories, which picks up the story where The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine left off. Holding a D.Phil. from Oxford University, Professor Pappe taught for more than two decades at the University of Haifa. In 2008 government pressure and death threats forced him to leave Israel. He joined the University of Exeter in the UK, where he is Professor of the College of Social Studies and International Studies and Director of the University’s European Centre for Palestine Studies.
