sonic weapons at the dnc
11 Jul 2004
"With protestors coming to New York and Boston for the conventions, might we see the first domestic use this summer? Gruenler hints: 'All I can say is there are cities you would recognize.' "

What's that thing in the picture? It's a Long Range Acoustic Device—a megaphone with unprecedented clarity and aim that can shoot compact sound waves across several hundred yards at up to 150 decibels. Designed by American Technology Corp., the LRAD is for fending off insurgents, dispersing crowds, flushing out buildings and telling people "not to come any closer," says Marine Capt. D. J. McSweeney. Thirty-three inches in diameter, the LRAD plays MP3s and prerecorded warnings in several languages and has an adjustable screeching tone. "It's very, very irritating," says American Technology's Carl Gruenler. So irritating that human-rights activists are worried about lasting hearing damage.

In February the Marines signed a $1.1 million contract for the devices; the I Marine Expeditionary Force took them to Fallujah and the Navy's Fifth Fleet has them in the Persian Gulf. (McSweeney didn't know if they'd been used.) Miami, Los Angeles, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and the Department of Homeland Security are considering purchases. With protestors coming to New York and Boston for the conventions, might we see the first domestic use this summer? Gruenler hints: "All I can say is there are cities you would recognize."

Re: sonic weapons at the dnc

Some excerpts from other news sources:

"LRAD is a breakthrough long-range hailing and warning, directed acoustic device designed to communicate with authority and exceptionally high intelligibility. From either a static location or vehicle mount, LRAD can issue a verbal challenge with instructions in excess of 300 yards in a focused beam, and follow up with a warning tone to influence behavior or determine intent. Recorded messages can be selected and transmitted over LRAD in multiple languages. Used in land-based roles for military operations other than war, LRAD will support missions including crowd control, area denial of personnel including checkpoint operations and clearing buildings.

"Though not officially part of the military's Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate, the 45-pound, dish-shaped device belongs to a developing arsenal of technologies intended not to kill but to deter.

Another such weapon, expected to be tested in the field soon, is the Active Denial System. It seeks to repel enemies with a painful energy beam.

Carl Gruenler, vice president of military and government operations for American Technology Corp., said LRADs are "in the beginnings of being used in Baghdad," though he said he lacked "initial feedback" on how they are working.

Dubbed "The Sound of Force Protection" in a company brochure, the devices can broadcast sound files containing warning messages. Or they can be used with electronic translating devices for what amounts to "narrowcasting."

If crowds or potential foes don't respond to the verbal messages, the sonic weapon, which measures 33 inches in diameter, can direct a high-pitched, piercing tone with a tight beam. Neither the LRAD's operators or others in the immediate area are affected.

The devices "place distance between the Marine and their threat, giving him/her more time to sort out a measured and appropriate response," Lt. Col. Susan Noel, force protection officer for the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, said in an ATC statement announcing the contract.

Gruenler compares the LRAD's shrill tone to that of smoke detectors, only much louder. It can be as loud as about 150 decibels; smoke detectors are in the 80 to 90 decibel range.

"Inside 100 yards, you definitely don't want to be there," said Gruenler, adding that the device is recommended for a range of 300 yards or less.

Hearing experts say sound that loud and of that high a frequency -- about 2,100 to 3,100 hertz -- could be dangerous if someone were exposed to it long enough.

"That's a sensitive region for developing hearing loss," said Richard Salvi, director of the Center for Hearing and Deafness at the University at Buffalo. "The longer the duration, the more serious it is."

Gruenler concedes that permanent hearing damage is possible if someone were exposed to the sound for lengthy periods.

But he said the high-pitched tone is intended to only be used for a few seconds at a time.

Sparkle Girl Excoriates Bastards

CNN reports “Troops get high-tech noisemaker” (Wednesday, March 3, 2004 Posted: 10:40 AM EST (1540 GMT)- http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/ptech/03/03/sonic.weapon.ap/index.html).

It has just come to Sparkle Girl’s attention that the U.S. military has a new toy, the “Long Range Acoustic Device, or LRAD”. This nefarious instrument of sonic torture promises to be useful for “dispersing hostile crowds and warding off potential enemy combatants”. With their customary scientific precision, CNN describes its function; “It blasts earsplitting noise in a directed beam”. Sparkle Girl is unimpressed. We have been doing that for years. In their playground attempt at one-upsmanship, the coercive state apparatus once again targets Seattle’s most degenerate sound art cell. “The developer of the LRAD, American Technology Corp. of San Diego, recently got a $1.1 million contract from the U.S. Marine Corps to buy the gadgets for units deployed to Iraq”. Must be nice. As usual, big business is in collusion with the repressive foot soldiers of state terror, all the worse for Sparkle Girl. Due to our policy against copyright, our ideas were helpless game before the predatory hooks of a Californian corporation so desperately fucking EVIL they feel the need to plunder the intellectual property of two 30-something lumpen- bourgeoisies. Design a weapon of your own invention, you cerebral pickpockets! That it was described as an “auditory barrage dispenser” is proof-positive that these billionaire bureaucrats did not hesitate to loot the reams of critical analysis written about Sparkle Girl and subvert those sacred texts to their own reptilian and insidious ends. “Dubbed "The Sound of Force Protection" in a company brochure, the devices can broadcast sound files containing warning messages.” Sparkle Girl has been broadcasting “warning messages” for 5 grueling years, and the parasitical pigs in power still aren’t listening! Here is the latest, then…stop ripping us off! Stop hounding Sparkle Girl! Stop calling us at all hours of the night! And trash your ridiculous, infantile “noise weapons” or we will bring two fifty-watt amplifiers over to your house and teach your grandpa how to fuck!!!

Interesting High Tech stuff with a big Gee Whiz factor.

Personally I am still most interested in those dusty over 200 year old American rights of assembly, right of association, protection against unreasonable search and seizure etc.

Anyone else?

I rad about these thingies a while back.
I am really curious what would happen if you had on high decible ear plugs, or ear muffs???????????

If industrial safety gear can keep out the high decible problems with numatic tools ext, why not this?

Worth a try atleast.

These non-lethal weapons seem to bank on the concept that we will not be prepared. It seems that with everyone, a little preperation goes a long way.
