July 25 event challenges Democrats to live up to the progressive vision of Paul Wellstone
21 Jul 2004
A roundtable discussion honoring the memory of Senator Paul Wellstone will challenge convention delegates and other Democrats to live up to the progressive vision that the late Senator personified.
A roundtable discussion honoring the memory of Senator Paul Wellstone will challenge convention delegates and other Democrats to live up to the progressive vision that the late Senator personified.

Senator Wellstone was well known for voting his conscience and faithfully standing against special interests to fight for working and poor people, the disabled, seniors, children, and anyone else without a voice in Congress. Wellstone was tragically killed in a plane crash in October 2002.

The event will be held on Sunday, July 25 at the Old West Church, 151 Cambridge Street (near Government Center), Boston from 4:00 to 6:00 pm.

Featured speakers will include: former Wellstone campaign manager and Executive Director of Wellstone Action, Jeff Blodgett; SEIU Secretary-Treasurer Anna Burger; Los Angeles hotel workers' Local 11 President Maria Elena Durazo; noted author Barbara Ehrenreich; radio personality Al Franken; social critic and author Frances Fox-Piven; Steelworkers Union President Leo Girard; radio personality Jim Hightower; author Arianna Huffington; Brooklyn Congressman Major Owens; and Boston City Councilor Chuck Turner.

Although Democrats portray themselves as the party of working families and the poor, the price of admission to most convention-related events is so expensive that it's almost impossible for average people to attend.

Advance tickets for the Wellstone forum are $50 with special low-income admission available.
The event will benefit two local social and economic justice organizations, the Union of Minority Neighborhoods and Massachusetts Jobs with Justice.

Tickets may be reserved by calling Jobs with Justice at (617) 524-8778 or go to https://secure.ga3.org/08/MARoundtable.

Paul Wellstone often described himself as the "Democratic wing of the Democratic party"

Now that he is gone and the Kuchinich/Peace in the Pricincts/Rainbow Coalition/Jerry Brown etc etc strategies have failed it is time for us to wake up. Leave the Democratic party and it's corporate friendly, corporate media approved "leadership"

Feel Free to visit www.michaelcavlan.org and see what some of us in Minnesota are doing to honour the memory of Paul.
