News :: DNC
Is this what democracy looks like?
27 Jul 2004
Video stills from Save Our Civil Liberties' "Is this what democracy looks like?" protest of the so-called "free speech zone."
welcome.jpg
There were three roles at the SOCL street-theater protest: DNC guards; prisoners; and gagged-press officers. Three press officers handed out flyers to the media that read as follows:

"WELCOME TO CAMP DNC, MADE IN USA

As an EMBEDDED REPORTER you are invited to observe, film, and photograph Camp DNC

RESPECT THE RULES of this camp; follow the direction of the press officer

DO NOT DISTURB the Prisoners"

in addition, the flyer included a collective statement:

"We are gathered here today in solemn and silent protest at the incarceration of pro-democracy demonstrators in the barbwire cage known as the DNC “Free Speech Zone.”

The extremist crackdown by the US government on civil and political freedoms in the wake of 911 and the war on terror ushers in the age of a "Guantanamo Bay/Camp X-Ray" approach to criminalizing the voices of the people. It is the latest in a series of harsh actions taken to constrain the world of ideas and alternatives by fences, walls and wire.

What does it mean when Boston, a city built on the history of revolutionary dissent, builds a barbaric confine for people who want to express their democratic rights?

Why do the Democrats stand silent while this assault on democracy occurs in the shadow of the Fleet Center itself?

From Abu-Ghraib to Camp X-Ray, Guantanamo Bay to the streets of Boston: IS THIS WHAT DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE?"

spectacular! Maybe this show should go on the road! Maybe this show should be repeated in town squares all across America! I think the Save Our Civil Liberties group are onto something here.
Great Work!

You're winning the media war on this one!
Cool thing!

This "prisoner-action" looks really great on the pictures, you could mean that the people are really prisoners... (which they certainly are in the "free speech zone")

Impressive! I hope more people have come to understand the reality of our "democracy".
Thank you!

If we want Democracy back, we will have to shut the economy totally down. Join the non-violent Revolution. Voting for a Democrat or Republican only encourages them to keep doing the same thing. 13,000 + Iraqi civilians are dead because WE did not do enough !

The answer is to vote for the libertarian Party presidential canadate. http://www.badnarik.org . The libertarians believe that all of America is a free speech zone and we would battle to restore ALL of our liberties every one and end this un just war period.
Re: Is this what democracy looks like?

actually no part of the system is the answer. alternative communities and ways of life are the answer. reform is not enough!

This protest was both dramatic and fitting (and was widely broadcast on cable networks in metro NY). WE NEED SIMILAR FOR NYC IN AUGUST! REMINDING AMERICANS of how Bush Regime truly Operates!

I Don't Get It

So, you're protesting the Islamic police-states that have murdered thousands of Americans, Europeans, and Asians in the name of opposing free speech?

To do that, you'd have to rape and dismember the prisoners and wait 30 years for anybody to do anything about it, as was done in Iraq.
