WWTTG (Why We Trashed The Gap)

Why We Trashed The Gap

On July 29th at approx. 1:45 pm, about a dozen activists stormed into the Gap on Mass Ave. in central cambridge. Inside, displays were turned over, cloths strewn about and spray-painted, and a general feeling of euphoria was created for a short time.
We chose this day and place in particular to draw the connection between corperate globalization and the democrats. In fact, the democarats have done even more than the republicans on this issue, as they bring along a segment of the population that would not go along with the republicans. We don't need to remind people that NAFTA, the WTO and many other trade agreements were passed by 'democratic' administrations. This action is our clear vote "NO" to more corperate rule.
This was done for several reasons. Most obviously, the Gap is one of the largest employers of sweatshop labor in the world. They have pushed corperate globalization on all of us. Most importantly, they have used this process to oppress and keep down people of the global south. Also, as one of the largest retail clothing companies, they are closely connected to unorganic cotton: one of the most chemicalized crops on the planet, poisoning our earth, air and water.
The Fischer family, which owns the Gap, also owns Mendocino Redwood Company (MRC), which continues to cut the last of the old-growth redwoods.
If that isn't enough, this particular Gap was (and is) at the forefront of gentrifying Central Square; occupying an upscale building that the community had fought to keep them out of (in other words: Why Not Trash The Gap?). So, for the people, the earth, the air and our communities, we say "Fuck the Gap".

You trashed a Gap. Were you wearing your NIke sneakers when you kicked over the displays..???

nice action! the anti- globaliation recliams some of its more hardcore roots. did yall get away with it without arrest/police harrasment?
Re: WWTTG (Why We Trashed The Gap)

Maybe not the most press-friendly or most productive action, but good message. The gap sucks. As there are more actions like this, all of us activists have to work on spreading the message that goes with them. That rich corporations, as well as the politicians need corporate backing to get into office are VERY connected with globalization, gentrification, envrionmental destruction, and the increasing gap between rich and poor. And to whoever did this, thanks for getting the message out through actions and words.

Fantastic, a bunch of people who are angry at their parents decide to take out their adolescent aggresion on a store. Instead of doing something productive for the movement, you all have managed to take the cheap way out and draw only negative attention (except, of course, from your adolescent buddies, because, hey, kicking things around a Gap is TUFF). There are other ways. Spend your energy doing things that will actually make a difference.

yaeh, leave the adolescent stuff behind, next time burn it down.

Fantastic. Lets try and be a little more devisive...

umm..nope, you still have it wrong. no amount of negative press will help as much as positive, productive press. and positive, productive press can only come from more legitimate actions. how can burning down a gap possibly help the anti-globalization cause? it will only make people angry at you. and that "you" becomes increasingly collective, until the majority of people are angry at all "activists," even those with very different aims from your own. so grow up and stop wasting your time. find a more productive, positive outlet for your ideas and frustration. stop being immature. nothing will hold the movement back more than a bunch of kids giving it a bad name. this movement needs to be legitimized. flagrant vandalism is a step in the wrong direction.

Okay, so now it seems that an attempt to deviate from the mindset of your average angry 15-20 year-old is met with nothing but paranoia and circular reasoning. "If they don't agree with us, they must be the feds." Have fun with the paranoia, folks. It will get you far. I'm not a fed and I'm not arguing that there aren't suit-types lurking on these boards. But so what? Even if they post all kinds of nonsense, you should approach that material just as you would any other post...with a little bit of critical thinking. Who's to say that what sounds like your average 15-20 year-old yelling to burn down the gap isn't himself an agent? See, there's no end to it. In the end, it's up to you to decide what posts to take as legitimate and which ones to dismiss. Just think for yourselves (oh, and, if you're doing all this stuff because you secretly hate your dad or mom, get help. seriously.).

does anyone know if you take pot on a plane across state lines what the charge is if you get caught? or if you get caught with pot at the metal detector say a 1/8oz what the charge is?

I am not sure what Kerry's position is on this.

Also, i think it is time for civilization to perish, and yes that is ironic to me. Greenanarchy is yet another outlook. So when folks say burn it down, I think what they are saying is destoy civilization because industrialization is destorying our planet. Just another way of looking at things.

"no amount of negative press will help as much as positive, productive press. and positive, productive press can only come from more legitimate actions" just a (slightly cliche) reminder... 'the revolution will not be televised'
Re: WWTTG (Why We Trashed The Gap)

That sounds like a West Coast thing to do.
I don't think it was good to attack the gap because they're a chain, but their owners own old growth coastal redwood groves in California that they are threatening to cut.

And you know Benetton - with the theme of 'United Colors' as though you are embracing diversity by shopping there? The Benetton family of Italy, which apparently runs a somewhat unscrupulous water utility corporation as well, bought up a huge tract of Patagonian land in Argentina - EXCEPT it shouldn't have been available to buy. There was a war where thousands of Mapuche indians were killed, and the government seized their land, and a gigantic tract bigger than Connecticut about was sold for wool raising for Benetton clothes, and the company is going around kicking off remaining Mapuches. More people should raise a fuss about this http://www.zmag.org/content/showarticle.cfm?SectionID=42&ItemID=5655

Dear Organizers,

Please stop your revolutionary deeds. It is starting to make me nervous. If you attack stores I own like the Gap, it might actually hurt my checkbook.

I am willing to send the folks at the Bl(a)ck Tea Society large checks, so you can all go buy SUVs. I know that's what you kids really want, anyway. I really support your causes, but come on, you're talking about endangering my bottom line here.

Signed,

Liberal Fat Cat.

(Actually, what's with people complaining about paint on clothes? I've got paint on all sorts of clothes and I still wear 'em. So can the gap customers, if they get over themselves a bit.

In solidarity, dannyp)

What a selfish action. Most actions like this give the participants a temporary thrill, but they do nothing to promote the cause. This particular outlet cleans up and goes back to their regular business. The higher ups at the Gap aren't going to give in to your demands because you took your aggression out on some pieces of cloth. Whatever. Go back to playing Dungeons and Dragons and wait for the next WTO, G8 or party convention to perform more childish actions. Leave the real work to people who think critically, not those who act rashly.
go become a yuppie

your a lame ass student. Get a job yah asshole. And then go burn down your boss's store! Your as pathetic as the undos and might even deserve their fate. Im in sort of a negative mood reading your pathetic liberal comments. OOOO the media.

WHO GIVES A FUCK! FUCK THE CORPORATE MEDIA

FOR EVERY CHILD IMPRISONED AROUND THE WORLD IN A GAP SWEATSHOP WHILE YOU SIT IN YOUR IVORY TOWER PROCLAMING RIGHTEOUSNESS ABOUT HOW OUR TACTICS ARE FAULTY!
DIRECT ACTION GETS THE GOODS!
BURN DOWN NIKE TOWN!

JUST DO IT~!

Violence begats violence. Now, who will suffer from your actions? The owners of The Gap, or the workers who have to clean up the mess you made?

Violence is violence, and an eye for an eye will only make the whole world blind.

What these so-called activists failed to mention is that they stormed into the Gap wearing ski masks and scaring all of the employees and the customers that worked there. Activism does not mean terrorizing innocent people. I hope that these people are in jail where they should be.

well, can't say i disagree, but if you come to nyc for the republican convention, don't trash starbucks. pass out union organizing pamphlets instead. the i.w.w. is in the middle of a heated campaign organizing starbucks workers.

"Diversity of Tactics" is just another name for making the radical left just as moraly bankrupt and unprincipled as the Republicans, Democrats, and irrespondible and immoral corporations. Good work.
