Robbed by a cop
30 Jul 2004
I am a high-school student from Vermont. I came to Boston to protest the Democratic National Convention. As I was leaving the city, I was robbed for the first time in my life. No, I wasn’t robbed by a mugger, or any other stereotypical criminal. I had my possessions stolen from me by a police officer.

After three days of protesting, I felt my message had been heard. In plain clothes, I walked by Government Center, on my way to catch a bus back home. Although there was no demonstration in sight, I noticed a thick line of riot cops, standing in front of a flower bed as if to defend it. I joked with a few bystanders, as we wondered why Boston spent $65 million on security, if the police had nothing better to do than defend flowers from imaginary protesters.
I decided to have one last bit of fun before I left Boston. Going over to the end of the line of riot cops, I began to write on the ground with sidewalk chalk “Line begins here for free doughnuts.” Before I wrote one letter, a cop approached me.
“How are you doing?” He asked.
“Fine, thanks. You?” I responded.
“What’s your name?” He continued.
“You can call me Aaron,” I replied.
“Let’s see some ID.” I declined to ID myself, as there was no reason for me to. Nevertheless, the cop immediately frisked me and started going through my pockets. Another cop took my backpack off my back and began to examine its contents.
“I do not consent to a search. You have no reason to search me. Where are my rights?” I demanded. The cops ignored me. The first cop went through my wallet. He asked me several questions about my ID, copying my name, birth date and address on to his palm. I asked if I was being detained. He said no, he was only asking me a few questions.
“Oh, so your name’s Aaron Lipman,” he said, looking at my ID. You wouldn’t happen to be that runaway kid from Vermont named Aaron Lipman, would you? We’re looking for him,” the cop stated.
“That’s ridiculous,” I replied. The cop questioned my age, saying I looked younger than my ID said I was. While the cops were searching my backpack, I asked the first cop for his name and badge number.
“Armstrong, number six,” he replied. Writing that down, I asked to see his badge, but wouldn’t show me. The second cop pulled several bandanas out of my backpack, one red, one green, two black, and one tie-dye.
“I’m confiscating these. It’s illegal to wear a mask on the streets of Boston,” Officer Armstrong explained.
“Do I look like I’m wearing a mask? Besides, what about free speech?” I asked.
“Free speech? There is no free speech,” Officer Armstrong stated. “Listen, you little fuck,” he continued, “I’m not letting you run around with a bandana over your face putting my fellow officers at risk.”
“The demonstration’s over. I’m just leaving the city now. Give me back my bandanas and I’ll be on my way,” I explained.
“Well, I’ll mail you your bandanas back to you tomorrow” Officer Armstrong promised. Yeah right, I thought.
What could I do? He was holding my bandanas, the rest of my gear was on the ground. I gathered it up and started off.
About half a block away, a citizen approached me. “Hey buddy, the cop just threw your bandanas the trash can by the plant and started joking about how stupid you were. Go back and talk with them some more,” he suggested.
I turned back. Walking up to the trash, I reached in, and retrieved my bandanas. Officer Armstrong glared at me.
“Hey, what do you know, free bandanas.” I smiled, and walked away. Officer Armstrong and another cop surrounded me, blocking my path.
“I confiscated those bandanas,” stated Officer Armstrong.
“You didn’t want them. You threw them away,” I said.
“That’s because you forgot to give us your address,” explained Officer Armstrong. I argued with him a bit more. The second cop finally said that they would mail me my bandanas, and that they had my address.
“What? You just said I didn’t to give you my address. Why did you lie to me?” I asked.
“Sorry, I forgot,” claimed Officer Armstrong, acting surprised as he looked at the palm of his hand where he had written my address a minute or two earlier. “I was going to mail them back, I just put them in the trash until I had a chance to take care of them,” he claimed.
“Do you always put confiscated items in the trash before you mail them back to people?” I asked, still holding my bandanas.
“Give me back the bandanas,” demanded Officer Armstrong.
“Nope, I’m not giving them to you,” I stated.
“Listen, you little fuck, give me those bandanas or you’re spending the next two days in the slammer,” Officer Armstrong threatened. At this point, a small crowd of bystanders had gathered to watch.
“If my bandanas mean that much to you, you can arrest me for bogus charges in front off all these people. I you want to, go right ahead,” I encouraged him, holding my wrists out for him to handcuff. “I’m not leaving town without my bandanas.”
Officer Armstrong grabbed my arm and pried my bandanas from my hands. “I’ll mail them back to you,” he stated once more. He walked off without another word. As I followed him, the second cop approached me.
“Hey Aaron, don’t mess with Officer Armstrong. Don’t follow him, that’s dangerous,” he stated, in a friendly manner.
“Oh, so you’re the good cop?” I asked. “Thanks, but I don’t need your advice. By the way, what’s your name and badge number?” The second cop identified himself as Jack McCarthy, badge number 0949.
Following Officer Armstrong, I watched him unlock the trunk to an unmarked car, and place my bandanas inside. Closing the trunk, he glared at me one last time. I shrugged my shoulders and walked off. I doubt I’ll ever get my bandanas back. I couldn’t help but realize that they were taken by someone with the mentality of a school yard bully. This being the first time in my seventeen years of life that I’ve had anything stolen from me, I wonder who the real criminals are in our society.
So, Officer Armstrong, I don’t know if you have a family waiting for you when you come home at night. But if you do, I wonder how you will respond when your children ask you how you protected the city of Boston today. Are you going to say that you picked on some skinny kid half your size and stole his bandanas, like a school yard bully, or are you going to tell them a lie, like the ones you told me? If your children knew the truth about what you do, would they be proud of you? I wonder, Officer Armstrong.

Nice commentary Bostonian. You're a real stand-up guy. Good luck on getting your MBA and furthering the slavery of the working class.

Aaron - congratulations! It's awesome that you made it down here for the week. As a Bostonian myself, I would like to officially welcome you to our great city.

You have endured a rite of passage here, in having been harassed by the pigs. It will happen many, many, many more times in the coming years. As you struggle against the chains of oppression, the donut munchers will annoy you time and time again.

Celebrate this.

It is living, organic proof that we are right and they are scared.
Re: Robbed by a cop

Just goes to show you , these Robo cops are reactionaries who live on nothing but hate and intimidation. They could give two shits about democracy and individual rights. They enjoy beating the crap out of people whose politics they detest, and they have no integrity at all.

It was gutsy of you to go back and engage them again. Don't be intimidated by their stupidity and arrogance. It sounds like you weren't. Thats probably what pissed him off.

Excellent article! It's very well-written and informative. It captures the spirit of protest, as well as the militarized, if not fascist, police efforts to harass dissenters. It has been picked up by NJ IMC
:-)

I should add that the flawless article reminds me of the need to pick up a style guide and read it.

Re: Robbed by a cop

Sounds like Bostonian is a cop or some right-wing, reactionary sub-human. Any person who did not have a problem with this is, without a doubt, a descicable and vile fascist creature. I am not okay with a police state, oppression of any nature or censorship. Aaron's article is further proof of the authoritarian direction this country has been heading and the downward spiral we cannot seem to stop. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Re: Robbed by a cop

By the way bostonian, it is painfully obvious you do not have a single intelligent thought or anything of substance to say. Please feel free to keep your insignificant off this page.
Re: Robbed by a cop

hey bostonian - you've done a great job making your city look like a pit of festering mongoloids - i'm shocked that someone as subpar as you has figured out the internet - is someone helping you log on?
Re: Robbed by a cop
30 Jul 2004
Aaron, you came to Boston and were not going to take any shit. Good for You.
But to cry "Robbed By a Cop" PLEASE.
Why would anyone have 5 Bandanas?
You wanted to cause trouble and the police dealt with you. Remember you’re the one who drew attn to yourself. Freedom of speech or were you busting balls. Do somthing positive and mail our troops a package or even a letter or better yet some bandanas. Because it becasue of them you have the freedom of busting a cops balls and not getting your ass kicked.
Re: Robbed by a cop
30 Jul 2004
Good reason for the five bandannas -- did you not see the cops with riot gear including pepper spray and possible CS containers?

If chemical weapons are used against protesters, a bandanna can be soaked in water or vinegar and put over the mouth to shield exposure. Many action guidelines suggest bringing several since people might not have 'em.

Or they might want to hold their hair back in the hot sun (it is July, after all).

Or they might like to have a hankie to wipe away sweat.

Or maybe they thought they might lose one.

Geez.

Hey Bostonian:
An ignorant fuckwad like you does not deserve to live in the city that was the cradle of our democracy. Speaking as an Irishman, I can only hope and pray that a fuckstain such as yourself does not claim to be Irish.

Remember folks, this is Boston, where the racist anti-segregation bussing riots were.
During the bigots rampage against segregation, Bernaddete Devlin, an Irishwoman of great integrity and courage, rightly compared these fuckwads to be the same as those protestant bigoted fuckwads back home in Ireland.

In other words, Bostonian is just another version of the Rev Ian Paisley. Fuck him.

As for Aaron, you my friend have just been declared an honourary Irishman. One of the calibre of those many fighting against British injustice and equality in the north of Ireland.

As for the cop, well in the north of Ireland, we do not call his kind pigs. We simply call them "the filth"

Dia Duith Agus Slan Go Foil Mo Chairde Nua. In the Irish Gaelic May God Bless You and Good Luck Go With You My New Friend. Thank you for standing up for justice and equality.

To Bostonian Pugh Mo Hoin. In Irish Kiss My Ass. In American... Motherfucker

You little Irsh snot nose bitch, PLEASE go tell you Irish grandmother about your struggle in Boston And watch her laugh at you to YOU TOOL...............
Re: Robbed by a cop

You would make a great Lawyer.
But honestly When you see Cops in Riot Gear
And if they start using Pepper Spray.
Why would you soak a bandanna in water?
Just get the hell out of there. That is the reason they are using the pepper spray.

What if somthing really did go down. The last thing I want to see is a young kid like Aaron running torwards cops in Riot gear.
Re: Robbed by a cop

The irrational anger expressed by this cop and some of the people voicing their opinions on this topic, is an expression of powerlessness. These people have extrememly low self esteem, and probably feel worthless. The only way they know to get people to pay attention to them is to lash out against anyone and everyone who will engage them.

These self loathing individuals were never shown any real love (by their parents, teachers, religious leaders, etc.). They never learned how to love, so they aren't even capable of it. Instead, they turn their passion into hatred and vitriol against others.

Rather than give them the negative attention that they crave, send them some compassion. Feel sorry for them, for they are unable to enjoy life as the rest of us can.

"Like an unchecked cancer, hate corrodes the personality and eats away its vital unity. Hate destroys a man's sense of values and his objectivity. It causes him to describe the beautiful as ugly and the ugly as beautiful, and to confuse the true with the false and the false with the true."

URA,
ahh ye great big ig'nant fuckstain upon the jockstrap of humanity. Talkin your "southie" shiite. Try coming to a place where real hard men are. The Falls Rd in Belfast. You and your type of ignorant, uneducated bigoted filth would fit in well with the Protestant Paisleyites and other pro-British fucks but would have the fuck kicked out of you by real, decent Irishman. Filth like you are a descrace to the Irish race. Bernaddette Devlin said it and so do I. People in the Irish Republican Army stood and fought ignorant fucks such as you.

By the way son, learn to spell Irish correct will ya? Then go crawl back under whichever filth encrusted rock you crawled out from.

Now go fuck away off will ya?

Re: Robbed by a cop

Ok this is the last time I engage with the bigots here. Then I'm off because you ignorant eegits are not woth the effort anymore. Mind you, your catholic v protestant comment is quite telling. Anyone who understands the dynamics of the conflict in the north of Ireland knows that the conflict is not and has never been about religion. It has always been about a brutal foreign occupation by the British Crown Forces and government there.

Right along side that is the notion about the role of the Catholic Church. There is a huge barrier between Irish Republicans and Mother Church. The Catholic Church has historically been supportive of the British presence in Ireland. That is why the Brits built them Monsooth Abby outside of Dublin. Mother Church has always been on the side of the powerful against the poor in Ireland. At least the top brass of the heirarchy were. On the ground, some were, some were not. Prime example is a Father from the Ardoyne in Belfast who would raise a flag to warn IRA volunteers that a brit patrol was approaching. Likewise Father Dennis Fall from Dungannon was a strong voice to help Bobby Sands and the other Hunger Strikers.

As for the wierd comment about a priest "getting to me as a child" well that is just plain creepy and wierd. Perhaps you are one of those born again, anti-papist bigots lurking all over. I dunno.

Boston is infamous for it's racist attacks against segregation and bussing. That, along with some of the comments here made me ashamed to be Irish. Then I remember Bobby Sands, Bernie Devlin, the St Patricks Brigades and my Irish pride returns.

And you lot can not take that away. Oh and Aaron, that honourary Irishman offer still stands. You just will not be a "southie" Bostonian Irishman.
True irishman stand up for those oppressed and brutalized. The rest are just another version of those cops who break strikes or pro-brit paisleyites in the north. "Irish" like those we dont need. Those Irish "need not apply."
Re: Robbed by a cop
30 Jul 2004
Thank you for a decent response in your post.
I just don’t see the oppression here in Boston
But I also have not walked in others shoes.
I am happy Aaron went back to the trash for his Bandannas And I am also happy he did not get his ass kicked. What would happen to Aaron in Ireland if he had this same run in with the police. (I truly have no clue) But I would guess it would have went a little different.

Have any police ever been involved with any serious discussion on here, or do they just try to start fights?

Reading these repsonses makes me sick. This is the future of my country.

Be proud of your city, fine. But to act like this shows the true amount of intelligence possessed by proud "Bostonians."

Aaron,

Thank you for coming to Boston to lift your voice and join the protest. I m sorry that a Boston Cop robbed you, but they were doing a lot of illegal things those days.

If you send me your address I will send you a bunch of replacement bandana's and other goodies that you can use at the next protest you attend.
Re: Robbed by a cop
02 Aug 2004
You little fucking twirp. Your scrawl about the Donuts was a deliberate provocation-and a reflection of your upper-middle class condescension and sense of superiority towards the genuine blue-collar working class cops. Frankly, I think they were far too gentle to you: they should have given you a good solid POUNDING until some blood started gushing out of your head. Or maybe stuck a night stick up your genitals. That in any case is what I would have done. But they must have concluded that filthy subhuman vermin like you are not worth the effort. Frankly, its a shame you weren't in the World Trade center on the morning of September 11.
Re: Robbed by a cop
02 Aug 2004
Are you kidding me!? You protested for 3 days. About WHAT? who knows and who cares. But then you wanted to have a little more "FUN". Do you think protecting every one in the city is a joke! Do you think that all those cops wanted to be there? Do you think you were the only shithead that was questioning authority? Do you ever think that the cops lives are ever in danger? They are threatened ever day! ARE YOU? Do you ever think that these cops put their life on the line for you? So you have the freedom to demonstrate. Don't you get fed up when someone treats you rudely or doesn't treat you with respect. Can you imagine that everyday? That is what you did. You said you felt your voice was heard. That is what you wanted. You couldn't leave well enough alone. Do you get threatened on a daily basis? Are you putting you life on the line to make it safe for others, others you don't even know? How dare you! You selfish little jerk. You make me sick. Grow up!
Re: Robbed by a cop
02 Aug 2004
You got what you deserved! Everyone screams and complains about the cops not respecting you..why should they when you dont't respect them? In this day of terrorism and that type of governement convention..you should be glad the cops were there and not having anything to do! As I see it..had you not tried to disrespect them with your "chalking" you would have walked right on by without incident. Wouldn't that have been a much more pleasent experience? Why don't you quite trying to be enemies with the cops and let them do what they are there to do in the first place...protect your sorry ass!
Re: Robbed by a cop

We shouldn't be surprised that there are plenty of cowards in the world like Aaron. I'm really not going to give you much thought, my friend, but only give you a little advice. How about reporting to your nearest recruiter, sign up for a combat unit and be cannon fodder for the real heroes in this country like our law enforcement officers. When your out in the middle of Gulf you would really appreciate the freedoms others allow you to enjoy. And get a haircut,Shaggy.
Re: Robbed by a cop
02 Aug 2004
Aaron,
Let me get this right, you used your gift of free speech to draw a chalk line indicating donuts to make fun of the "pigs" who had been working 16 hour shifts for a week straight to protect your protesting ass from violence and possible terrorist attacks. Then you get mad when they don't like this and further use your free speech to write about it and how awfully you were treated. In other countries where you aren't free you wouldn't have had bandanas tossed in the garbage, but your butt thrown in jail indefinately.

I can't wait until the day something really happens to you. What are you going to do then? Call the police you hate so much and disrespect so easily for help? Because when you do they will be there.

You ignorant little boy. It is amazing that my toddler is more mature than you. He already knows, you don't call someone a name if you will cry if they call you one back. Don't hit someone if you don't want to be hit back. You must have been one coddled child to miss out on these life lessons. Write a real article when you grow up.
Re: Robbed by a cop
02 Aug 2004
You know, you deserve everyting that happened that day. You make fun of someone like a school yard bully you should be treated the same. They were protecting the City of Boston, have you forgotten the terrosim threats this country is under. Dumbass.
Re: Robbed by a cop

Ha-ha you taught those cops a lesson. About what an dumb ass you are. What a unique idea - free donuts this way. Our educational system is turning out the bright ones. Bet you'll get be ivy leaguer with that kind of out the box thinking. Kudos to you.
Re: Robbed by a cop

What the police officer did was wrong, however, why do you feel the need to cover your face. Is it because of the illegal actions you may take part in, Throwing bags of piss for one example. Anti government/ establishment people like your self are quick to point out the flaws in others in public service but you should concentrate on more lofty goals like paying back that student loan for that liberal education.

I applaud free speach, however, folks like you make it difficult to ensure the rights of everyone because of your smug disrespectful arrogance. Go back to Vermont
Re: Robbed by a cop
03 Aug 2004
The reason Boston and other cities have to spend $65 million of your tax payer dollarss is because of the events that happened at the protest in Seattle at the WTO. Now every major event since has had twice the police presence, paid for by my tax paying dollars because "peaceful" demonstrators like you have such a difficult time keeping the peace.

Why would you need bandanas to protect against chemical "weapons" unless you and your fellow protestors got out of hand?

Must have been a let down not to use those bandanas because the "cops got out of control".
To not get arrested and make your name as a liberal puke. Glad to see you put forth the extra effort. I'm sure you will have more success in the future then get to brag to your friends in rags such as this about your exploits.

Ever think maybe if guys like you exhibited some self control that the cops wouldn't be there raking in the overtime but home? Nahhh, sure you didn't. Why would pukes like you think about the consequences of your actions at all.
Re: Robbed by a cop
03 Aug 2004
People like you MAKE ME SICK! These men and women put their lives on the line every day for you, so that you can turn around and use your stupid immaturity to make fun of them. What exactly were you protesting anyway? Grow up, get a job, and when you learn about the real world, come back and we can talk... until then.... you have no right to talk about America's Police Officers.
Re: Robbed by a cop
03 Aug 2004
Very well-written and interesting article. You exercised your freedom of expression and got harrassed for it. You were brave to stand up for your rights like that. Remember, not all cops are that bad. Plenty of them didn't want to be out there for no reason, when they could have been home with their families. I collect bandanas myself, and I always like to have a few with me. I don't know if you used the bandanas to hide your identity during the protests, but I doubt it, since you have no problem exposing it here. It sounds like you simply peacefully expressed your beliefs. It's a shame that so many people responded to your articel intolerantly, ignorantly, or just plain innarticulately. Your article and the intolerant responses to it show that we have to stand up for our and defend our freedoms.

If you were leaving why did you think it necessary to break these cops balls? Are you so confused as to why that was done to you. These cops do this for a living. Does a 17 year old from VT have nothing better to do? Why don't you stay in VT where you can wear your sisters bandannas all you want in peace.
I wonder why the cop "harassed" that youth?

BANK ROBBERS
MUSLIM TERRORISTS
BURGLERS
MUGGERS

Oh, and I forgot one....CLOWNS. What did you expect from the cop, a donut?
