01 Aug 2004
Modified: 07:27:57 PM
Pictures of Thursday's march from Copley Square to the DNC.
We left Copley Square around 1 o'clock and walked up Boylston.

Heading back down Newbury street

we walked by some fancy stores.

Why cover your face? Nothing to hide. Screw the damn pigs! All they're good for is shaking down people and eating doughtnuts! Anarchist and other protesters are #1 in my book! Remember, dissent is healthly for democracy. Nothing can stop corporate PIG welfare. Except freedom of speech!
Peace to all!

My lord, how many posts on Boston Indy these days are accusnig people of being cops? Yes, we kmnow the cops read the boards, but just assigning every comment with which you disagree to cops really shuts down discussion. Yes, that post was very cheerleady. But frankly, there is little reason to hide one's face, especially on a permitted march, especially if you're a citizen and don't have outstanding warrants. The main thing it does it make you harder for any passerby to identify with or feel any comraderie with. and that doesn't help build a movement.

If the only people masking up at demos were undocumented, or wanted, or planning to break the law...

They would just arrest the people with masks.

The point of wearing masks isn't necessarily to mask one's own identity from surveillance, but to create a context within which it is easier for those who NEED to can mask THEIRS without being singled out.

That said, I do agree with the general sentiment. This mask thing, especially when it's a legal/symbolic march, can get a little silly and doesn't really welcome potentially sympathetic people to conversation. Masked stranger means "don't talk to me, I'm busy."

mj, I agree with you that in theory, masking up can create that kind of a context. But in practice, I've rarely seen it serve that function. It's often a small number who have the least to lose who mask up, and the goal often seems to be more about feeling cool. I say this as one of those who's done it at times.

I just think that we should remember its tactical importance and keep it on the back burner for those situations.

For too many in the U$A, there is no such thing as permitted rallies and free speech...

On the other hand, computer based video recognition is done through eye matching, so perhaps large dark glasses would be a better way to create a context of anonymity... or better yet, well wrapped kufiyas, shadowing the eyes...

a lot of people mask up because they don't like having their faces on police surveilance footage
