J4: Activists invade WBAI
04 Jun 2001
Scuffle breaks out between activists and station management.
This morning, at about 9AM Eastern Time, supporters of the recently silenced 'Democracy Now' program invaded the offices of Pacifica Radio station WBAI (the station that normally airs the show) in New York. The protestors attempted to unfurl a banner from the windows of the station, but were prevented from doing so by station management. Some reports indicate that protestors also attempted to temporarily take over the broadcast, but if these reports are correct, the attempt appears to have been unsuccessful. As the protestors were accosted by Pacifica staff, a scuffle apparently broke out between WBAI producer Paul DeRienzo and activist Kevin Pritchard. Details are still sketchy about what caused the scuffle, and its aftermath is unclear.

Pacifica Radio has recently been conducting a pledge drive which has superceded the station's regular programming. In the past, these pledge drives have been used as a temporary cover for the permanent removal of programming that the Pacifica management wanted silenced. Activists fear that the current pledge drive is covering up just such an attempt to close down the popular 'Democracy Now' program, which is hosted by Amy Goodman.
