Palestinian Protester Faces Felony Charges In Brookline
12 Jun 2001
Modified: 15 Jun 2001
Amer Jubran was released yesterday from Taunton after an outstanding warrant was dismissed. Jubran, who led the peaceful anti-Zionist demonstration, faces felony charges in Brookline for allegedly kicking Mr.Koifman a Zionist attending Israeli Independence celebrations as he walked through the protest with his family.
On Saturday June 7th Amer Jubran, along with other organizers, met with police to coordinate the permitted anti-Zionist protest. At the meeting police made several requests all of which the organizers agreed to. In accordance with police organizers relocated the protest from CVS in Coolidge Corner where celebrations were planned to Fleet Bank across Beacon Street, a very wide two lane street with trolly tracks. Protesters also refrained from using any sound amplification devices, or noise makers.

The protest which began at 11:30am grew quickly. Over 200 supporters arrived representing a diverse collection of local and national organizations. Among them were Muslims, progressive Jews, Christians, Israelis, members of the Black community, Colombians and other South American activists, union workers who came in solidarity.

Despite the peaceful nature of the event tensions were high as the Brookline police parked a wagon next to the protest, videotaped the entire event. During the protest Mr.Jubran liasoned between police and protesters and helped defuse heated exchanges between protesters and Zionist on their way to the celebrations. Thus at about 2:00pm after two and a half hours of successful peaceful protest protesters were surprised to notice an increased police presence. At that time a group of 7-10 officers approached Mr.Jubran and escorted him into the Fleet Bank building presumably to discuss further cooperation. Mr.Jubran was asked if he had attacked anyone and denied the charges. He was then taken into the wagon away from most protesters' view. Jubran's absence was noticed by a few protesters who approached officers to request information and were threatened with arrest. Mr.Jubran's rights were read only upon arrival at the Brookline Police Station.

Most protesters left following Mr.Jubran's arrest, only 15 people remained at the scene while others went to the police station to bail Jubran out. Bail was not accepted and several potential charges were provided by officers outside the locked police station. One of these charges was an outstanding warrant in Taunton for a bad check written in '93. Brookline police then transferred Mr.Jubran to Norfolk prison for the night and filed paperwork that would send him to Taunton in the morning instead of following routine procedures of arraigning him in Brookline before sending him else where.

As Mr.Jubran faced the judge in Taunton 15 supporters and two lawyers waited for his arrival in Brookline where his case was called. At about 3:00pm Mr.Jubran's warrant was dismissed, with the help of his court appointed lawyer, as a mistake and he was released immediately. Again despite routine procedures his personal belongings including his keys and wallet remained in Brookline. Meanwhile supporters in Brookline were told repeatedly he was on his way there. Fortunately by 2:00pm supporters were weary of promises and on their way to Taunton.

This morning Mr.Jubran faced felony charges for attack with a weapon, his foot, in Brookline. A pretrial hearing will be held next Monday June 18th 9:00am also in Brookline at 360 Washington Street please come and show support.

It appears as though this police action was intended to deter anti-Zionist protest in the City of Brookline by enstilling fear in potential protesters. Besides its initial successes in weakening the protest, police actions have only served to unite supporters further.

Fuck this shit.

When's the next protest?
This may be 'reactionary' but . . .

Protest this sort of thing ? Picket/blockade the police stations in Brookline. Let's make 'Citizens arrests' of police overseers that are known to have violated Civil protections. etc. etc. Hit and run blockades of intersections all over town (stop all rush hour traffic for 5 minutes each) until the unjustly arrested are released WITH A FORMAL APOLOGY. In each case the cops may/will be called but the blockaders could/should move to the next area before direct confrontation occurs. Could brave souls files "charges" against police officers (like harrassment, murder, drug dealing) without evidence, then just drop the charges on the day of the court hearing. Oh, is that Illegal ? I'm not "advocating" that you should break the law. Hell, become a cop and rat them out anonymously, one by one.
How many people have a video camera, keep you batteries charged!!

I would like to wish Mr. Jubran luck, and I wonder when I will be arrested for having feet.
