Commentary on RNC demonstrations.
Less-than-Legal
By Cathy Gatling
August 23, 2004

When they say “we are marching,“ United for Peace and Justice (UFPJ) and many other groups and individuals are giving an appropriately strong message concerning civil liberties and constitutional rights now at risk in NYC, and this country.

In the latest "police state" to go up, many are organizing “the other” huge event despite massive police build-ups and inventories of less-lethal, non-lethal, and less-than-lethal weapons--all potentially LETHAL !

Will NYC join Seattle, Miami, and Boston? Are they indicative of where this country is headed? Is this all we got ? Is this it ?

‘Cause I’m thinkin’ Nixons, Bushes, and Cheneys have brought us to this moment. And THEY have a lot more “toys” at the table now and that bothers me. It’s big brother and big sister knocking at my door.

This "police state" may be expecting terrorists acts, but they won't be from demonstrators, nor will they justify the use of less-than-legal spying techniques, less-than-legal interrogations, less-than-legal denials of permits, less-than-legal abuse of civil liberties and constitutionally protected rights.

Nor will color-coded terror scares deter the demonstrators. Remember, we were THERE when you were invading and killing, and practicing on/off wheeling and dealing with all these countries. The US of A just may have spawned this threat of current terrorism. Guess that was after the Taliban visited George Jr. in Texas during his term as governor.

Hey, speaking of those testy elections coming up…do ya think they know we can flip a switch and VOTE THEM OUT ? Of course…hence their reprehensible behavior. And is this also why there are rumors that International Election Committees will monitor elections for the first time in the US of A ! Wonder where these folks have been for the last 20 years or so.

So don’t “stand by” while our democracy is experiencing technical difficulties--let’s speak out and get out !

Cathy-

Try a book called "The Elements of Style." Please.

Cathy, by far the sharpest escalation in paramilitarization of the police happened under President Clinton. Just so you don't think this is a "nixon, bush, cheney" thing and that it'll stop if we "vote them out" and a Democrat administration occupies the executive.

Under Bush? The cops get to invade your home, apartment or in your case? Trailer. WITHOUT A SEARCH WARRANT! Oh, they get to tap your phone, read your mail and check your library book habit!
NONE of the presidents before Bush let cops do that!
Why do you thing the cops want Patriot 2 Act? To do the same thing.
Bush wants the Patriots 2 Act too! I wonder why?
Bush=Nazi! Pure and simple.
YOU ARE IN NEED OF SOME SERIOUS SCHOOLING!

Strunk: Muck u. I hardly ever write in the "traditional" way. I am familiar w/ "The Elements of Style", etc. as I am a copyeditor. I suggest you loosen up a bit.

mj: just 'cause i didn't mention Clinton doesn't mean i'm unaware of HIS stuff. They ALL stink.

That's good, Cathy. I will loosen up. Please do not let your prose be bent into shape by society's pliers.
