Protest racism at UMass Amherst
27 Sep 2004
Protest racism at UMass Amherst by calling the following administrators NOW!
no.jpg
URGENT! FORWARD TO ALL LISTS!
POST WIDELY!

http://wmass.indymedia.org/newswire/display/3562/index.php

To all members of the UMass community and beyond,

Pictures have been found of the student leadership, from the Student Government Association (SGA), and members of the Student Center for Educational Research and Advocacy (SCERA), drunk, playing card games, and writing and posing next to racist (KKK) symbolism written on a chalk board while in the SCERA office, in the Student Union Building at UMass-Amherst.

These photos took place **A DAY** before the Edward Bustamante presidential election was thrown out last semester, on March 29. Mr. Bustamante, a person of Latin American descent was eventually elected president after a struggle with racist forces within the SGA and the administration.

Click on one of these sites to see the pictures:

For the complete site (while it's still up), go to the SCERA Student Coordinator's website, where he has posted these pictures, apparently unaware that there's anything wrong with them: http://3dick.atumass.com.

These students are the key leaders in the SGA. All of them have positions in either SCERA or the SGA (and some have both). Many of them are running for SGA Senate in the race this Wednesday, September 29.

Patrick Higgins
SGA Speaker, previous Presidential candidate, and SCERA Board member

Brian Roberts
SCERA Student Coordinator and SGA Senate Nominee

Tim Daly
SCERA member and previous Trustee candidate

Michael Sheridan
SCERA member, former SGA Senator, and SGA Senate Nominee

Seamus Brennan
SGA Associate Speaker and former SGA Senator

Adrienne Girard
Former SCERA member and former SGA Senator (A current STPEC student)

Lindsay Higgins
SGA Senator and SGA Senate Nominee

Deirdra Feeley
SGA Senator and SGA Senate Nominee

Stacy Canepari
SCERA member and OHAG member

We can't let these people keep their positions in our student government. We can't tolerate such blatant racism and irresponsibility at our university.

Furthermore the administration must be held accountable for its institutional racism where this example is but the most recent manifestation. From the highest levels the UMass Amherst administration and the UMass System president’s office has mobilized to relentlessly attack students of color dismantling affirmative action programs, removing advising programs for students of color and more.

Future actions will be forthcoming but for now

Perhaps I have a unique sense of humor but I don't see those pictures as proof of a racist student government. There have been claims that the pictures drawn on the dry erase board are to mock the allegations of Higgin's racist attitude. I don't claim to have a full grasp of SGAs past and present actions but I think it's completely possible that these are merely irresponsible drunken doodles and do not reflect a racist attitude on the participent's part.

I do agree that it shows a insensitivity and a lack of understanding of what it means to be a leader.

When I first viewed the pictures I didn't see the kids "posing next to racist (KKK) symbolism" what I saw were normal drunk, white college kids who drew a cartoon which seemed to me and I think most rational people to either be mocking the KKK or mocking be labeled a "racist" a strong term that you throw around lightly with no real evidence to back your claim up. Then I noticed your e-mail: and the source for this groundless, alarmist post became all too clear. It's only fitting for IAC/ANSWER/WWP (you're all run out of the same place and by the same crazy Soviet-Red cult) to make a big deal out of nothing with no evidence because factual information is your biggest enemy. That's why IAC and WWP openly deny that ethnic-cleansing occurred in the Balkans, assert that the Chinese government's response in the Tianamen Square massacre was justified, and that North Korea is some workers utopia run by "the people". You guys have published glowing, supportive portrayls of dictators like KimJongIl, Castro, Saddam, and Milosevic yet spend your time making baseless allegations against UMASS kids whom dont appear to be anyone I would probably want to hang around though I bet they're more coherent than the folks running your groups.

Alex: "I do agree that it shows a insensitivity.."

would you concede that the nature of the serious allegation of racism framed in the way it was practically suggesting that these kids had sheets on their heads, is completely dirty and unjustified. The whole way the article was constructed mirrored the propagand tactics of people like Hannity, Limbaugh, and Bush/Cheney04. Actually more fitting would be to draw comparrison to Soviet propaganda given that the leadership behind IAC/ANSWER/WWP are most likely very well conditioned in "active measures" techniques.
Fuck you, Matthew.

Its a good thing these misguided and ignorant white people happened to be in the same room at the same time as this drawing, otherwise how would all of those picketers have gotten pretext for such as large demonstration and a Putsch against student government? Isn't the alcohol issue a red herring though? I thought everyone drank at college.
