Re: Student and Youth AntiWar March, Sat 12/4

are there going to be speakers?
Re: Student and Youth AntiWar March, Sat 12/4

There will indeed. Howard Zinn, Boston City Councillor Chuck Turner, representatives from Military Families Speak Out, and many youth and student activists will all speak at the rally. There will also be open mike time for other people (preference will be given to youths) who show up and want to speak.

i was told the speaking would not run over an hour though..! short and sweet!

Why call it the Student and Youth AntiWar March? Shouldn't everyone come? Let's do it every week? (Every day?) I hope it doesn't take us another 4 years to make the antiwar movement visible; we need to start putting some real pressure on now.
Nonethess, thanks for organizing the March. See you there.

yes, everyone is certainly invited! the point of this is that it is organized by a student/youth led coalition, with special emphasis on getting younger folks involved, and the speakers will pay special attention to the specific impact of the war on the younger generation and education. sorry if that was unclear, i think its rather fuzzy messaging myself, but a good idea.

it would be nice to have massive marches weekly. there are weekly rallies at copley (i believe around 5 or 6) on tuesdays organized by ujp, along with other local weekly vigils.
While i would like to see weekly marches, I'm not sure what the purpose would be. we all know we can't stop the war by marching, and of course there are other reasons to have such a march, but we need to re-evalute our tactics if this is really our goal.

marches have not been terribly effective. it is certainly important to gather in massive numbers periodically to show that the opposition is NOT going away. good on our brothers and sisters in Ottawa yesterday! but really, it would be more effective to have CONSTANT small decentralized acts of resistance, opposition, protest, dissent, humor, performance, and public artworks. we ARE the people of the United States! We have rights, lets exercise them, along with our conscience and our judgement and get in the faces of those who we are opposing. Constant legal actions and aggressive letter writing and badgering of the media is clearly in order.

but poorly attended marches are not sending much of a message to anybody. you will have the editor of the Globe snorting at you with derision...oh those handful of grubby nobodies, they don't represent the public. instead he will publish the propaganda and the poll numbers right up until they handcuff him in the gas chamber, the idiot.

Why don't you support the men and women who give these pinkos the freedom to protest?

whats the peace police?
Re: Student and Youth AntiWar March, Sat 12/4

The "peace police" is a derogatory term for what are otherwise known as marshalls or peacekeepers--people at major legal marches who make sure everyone knows which way to go and keep fights from breaking out between protesters and hecklers. People who have trouble distinguishing between a direct action (where marchsalls would not be appropriate) and a legal march object to them. One can certainly criticize them for getting too sucked into their job sometimes, but there is an appropriate role for them at a legal march (as opposed to a direct action).

Peace marchers aren't peaceful when they're setting fires and punching cops!
