Invitation for Activists 2 meet w Chuck Turner
26 Mar 2005
Eyewitness account by performing artist @ 3/20/05 & an Invitation to activists interested in attending an upcoming session w Chuck Turner on Street Stratagys, Organizing, and forming Coalition across the usual barriers
Hi people
I'm the poetess spokenword artist who did the piece with the human beat box on 3/20 at Boston Common.

Eyewitness account & invitation to a session w Chuck Turner below:

After seeing what happened to Jamie right in front of us as the march re-entered the Commons, then witnesing the elders and youth set upon by officers, myself and Nate (the humanbeatbox) went to the police station with Alison of Boston MOBE and two of the Legal observers. We hung out there with these dudes familys along with ABC, the Lawyers Guild, Eve (from MOBE) and Chuck Turner till all were released. Dan the Bagel man and Steve Isk. were there as well, and everyone was friendly with each other, no silly infighting.. just there to free the impounded and see if they were ok. Anyway, noone else was there with us at the Jail. Noone else from the marchers, etc. We saw the money collected from the crowd get given directly to ABC and all used to pay bail, allong with witnessing the massive generocity of the sisters & bros of AnarchistsBlackCross, a group I hadent ever heard of till Sun.

I'm still impressed by that act, and by Chuck Turner MARCHING w the unpermitted march, then standing up inbetween Cops and the youth they sought to beat or arrest, acnowledging folks feelings, pledging to help, then and going over to the Jail and staying there till 1030pm or so.
I really like his vibe.

So, I am writing to say I wrote some e-mail to Chuck, and he replyed proptly to me stating that he would LOVE to hold an open session for all those activists and anarchist youth, marchers, people who are about freedom of speech etc. who would like to attend and rap w him personally.

He is willing and wanting to meet with us'all to discuss and share tactics of street organizing, rallys and marches, and how to handle the cops, press, on the fly situation stratigys, etc.

Who would like to attend such a thing and ask Chuck questions/ talk informally with him?

I mean, hey: Why Not?

Why not ask questions directly to those with their feet in halls of power who show all of us that they care by keeping their feet in the street?

Why not learn from elder activists who have the street cred and heart and guts left in them to march with youth?

Who wants to meet up w Chuck Turner?
Lemme know! =) This will happen SOON so hit me back asap for location and details.

love & PEACE,
your sistah,
Amatul

Uh, maus, before you go bashing Chuck Turner as just another politician, you might want to learn a little bit about his history. Before he got elected to Boston City Council, he spent decades in Dorchester and Roxbury as a community organizer and civil rights activist. And not a particularly tame one either. It's worth nothing that on Sunday he helped lead an *illegal* march. And I've heard him argue (at the Boston Social Forum) that the only way to address poverty in this country is through a massive campaign of nonviolent direct action in DC--reviving an idea King had shortly before he was assassinated, to create a massive tent city of the poor in front of the White House and not go away until our nation's priorities change. I share your general distrust of politicians, but Turner is not your run of the mill politician--he is a not even your run of the mill porgressive politician. He is a nonviolent warrior. You may not agree with his decision to run for public office, but show him some respect. I think young folks could probably learn a lot from his years of experience in grassroots organizing. And if he wanted to shore up his career, would he really be inviting a bunch of that much demonized group, young anarchists, in to meet with him?

I don't agree with his decision to run for public office, and I respect him.
