UMass Amherst: Hundreds of students and employees march on campus and block traffic: video...

UMass Amherst- Protest March - 3-31-05

Quicktime movie file...
march-march.gif
Hundreds of students and grad student employees march and block traffic before delivering more than 350 letters demanding a fair contract for the Graduate Employee Organization, UAW Local 2322 AFL-CIO, grad student teaching assistants who face severe takebacks from UMass negotiators. For more info see http://www.geouaw.org

The march was also protesting UMass Chancellor Lombardi's plan to deal with the racism on campus outlined in a Diversity Commission report that showed clear racial tensions on campus, markedly demonstrated by a thread of emails showing clear complicity between UMass Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Mike Gargano, Director of Student Legal Services Chuck Dimare, and SGA leader Patrick Higgins. The emails link the UMass administrators and Higgins in a boldfaced attempt to dismantle the Office of ALANA Affairs and eliminate GEO positions in the office. Several Unfair Labor Practice and union grievance charges have been filed with Mass Labor Relations Commission.

Patrick Higgins is a former student who appeared in photos posted online, drinking in student offices and posing with a caricature drawing of himself as a KKK Grand Wizard.

Other labor direct action on the campus has included flying pickets and leafletting new student tours. Faced with university intransigence at the bargaining table, GEO plans to escalate actions in coming weeks.
