Quack Block calls on activists to join them at the 2005 Death and Taxes Event on Saturday, April 9th, 2005

Lawrence – Police are on edge as reports are circulating that the legendary “Quack Block” are calling for a demonstration and shut down of Raytheon during the 2005 Death and Taxes event. The event, now in its sixth year, is a demonstration and march from the IRS building in Andover, down the road to the weapons manufacturing plant of Raytheon.

The “Quack Block”, anarchist rubber duckies who are part of a united front called TTW (Tubby Toys of the World) have appeared at this event in the past, as well as other events in support of peace and justice all over the world. Their spokesduck, “Big Yellow” had this to say. “We are calling on children’s toys everywhere to join us in the streets on this day. We must speak up against this war machine that brings death and destruction all over the globe. We must speak up against our tax dollars being used to fund this machinery. Plus with all this money being spent on weapons, there is nothing left for rubber duckies, toy boats, stuffed animals, training wheels for kids bikes and bubble bath. These are all essential for the happiness and well-being of little kids and these corporations are destroying these possibilities.”

Police and religious leaders also fear a repeat of past years when everyone from Jesus to Gandhi to Darth Vader and assorted Jedi Knights have appeared at this event. “The biblical implications of Jesus returning after 2000 years are overwhelming. We must be doing some real fucked up shit,” said Father John Ramos of St. Michael's Church in North Andover. Local trekkie and former bass player with the Reagan Babies, Jason Berube, remembers when he went head to head with Lord Vader over the concept of economic conversion. “Dude, I was just suggesting that our communities would be better served if we used our tax money for civilian purposes, rather than to promote a culture of death. Lord Vader nearly took my head off with his light saber. Thankfully some Jedi Knights stepped in and saved my ass”.

Organizers of the event say that they are holding this event to add their voices to the resistance that exists both across the country and across the globe to the brutal vision of militarism, a vision that runs hand-in-hand with corporate economics and political disenfranchisement. They welcome people or organizations that want to help organize of co-sponsor this event.

Death & Taxes Resistance Festival is about Resisting our government and corporate control over our tax dollars. It is about recognizing that while many of our citizens go without jobs, healthcare, housing and good schools for our children our government spends .53 of each of our tax dollars to fund corporations like Raytheon.

Raytheon develops the tomahawk missile (that has been used in Afghanistan and now Iraq) that cost between $600,000 to 1 million to develop; moreover Raytheon's CEO continues to grow rich while people continue to be laid off in the hundreds. How did this all get started? It got started by activists who formed the Bread and Roses Affinity group with the help of Lawrence Grassroots Initiative in 1999 to draw attention to Raytheon's role in supplying weapons used against civilians in the wars in Yugoslavia and Iraq. Nowadays it is organized as project of Massachusetts Global Action.

What do you hope to accomplish with the death and taxes resistance festival?
We hope to expose our government’s irresponsible use of our tax dollars and expose corporations like Raytheon that receive OUR tax dollars and then turn around and lay off hundreds of employees. We also hope to share with people information about non-violent direct action, and war tax resistance. And we hope people will join us to gather in celebration of life!
