Interview :: GLBT/Queer
Boston Pheonix editor Sarah Hodkinson advocates censorship of
11 Apr 2005
Modified: 02:10:25 PM
Who's afraid of the truth about the 14-year old whores sold in the back of "aternormal" Boston Pheonix. The editors of the Boston Pheonix.
I am a journalism student doing research into American leftist print media. As a small part of my research I am contacting editors of left-of-center weekly papers and asking three questions specifically regarding the sex industry ads that most, but not all, alternative weeklies accept advertising from.

Today I called The Boston Pheonix and asked them the same questions I have asked 15 other alternative papers and editor Sarah Hodkinson told me she would not answer any questions on the subject. I tried explaining it's for research and if everything's legal and ethical there should be no need to censor information that affects our community, but she again refused to answer any questions on sex industry ads and then hung up on me.

I thought I'd bring this to my journalist bretheren in open media and see if we can't get some basic information from the Boston Pheonix. As a former sex industry employee, I believe raw honesty and unabashed commitment to being so truthful it hurts are integral to unmasking the quasi-hidden sex industry'. When 90% of sex workers admit they're being pimped and 92% say they want out of sex work immediately but aren't free to choose to leave, there are cultural questions that should be asked and currently are not asked by leftist media too beholden to sex industry money to even consider biting the hands that feed them. www.prostitutionresearch.com

If you can, please call Sarah at 617-450-8717 and see if you can get her to answer at least one, at best all three, of the following questions she was uncomfotable speaking aloud honestly. At the very least she will know that some people are not all right with the people who generate our media refusing to be held accountable and hoping to keep their financial dealings with pimps and other on-the-record-convicted organized criminals secret from the public.

1. Are background checks done on persons placing classified ads to ensure they're of legal age and are not trafficked or coerced into prostititution?

2. If the Boston Pheonix is neither the escort or the client in these transactions, how does your paper get around laws in your state seeking to prevent third party panderers from profitting off prostitution, ie. pimping?

3. Has your newspaper received any letters or emails from left-identified persons on the issue of women's rights regarding prostitution in the past year, and if yes what was the general concern raised?

It's not the end of the world, I know, there are at least 100 other weekly papers I can, and will, call for my research. But it's the principle, y'know. the idea that Sarah is 100% willing to take the money and design and print sex industry ads but 100% unwilling to even listen to questions about the Boston Pheonix's rather large role in her neighborhood pimp & ho culture.

Call if you can, 617-450-8717

Boston Pheonix is a private business.
11 Apr 2005
They have a right not to answer questions, outside of a court, about their business practices. This is not a case of censorship, it is a case of failing to cooperate with a journalism student (something they have no obligation to do).

So just because they can keep their criminal, unchecked financial income from prostituting girls (tho it's illegal according to the law) private that's all right? God bless the all mightly Corporation and it's rights to privately sublet the cunts, anuses and mouths of 13-14 year old runaway from their pimps without pesky journalists getting in their profiteering way.

What's good for business is good for Amerika.
Think clearly.

Opposing their ad based prostitution business is a good cause. Calling their refusal to talk with you about censorship is not a good cause. Misnaming their reply just makes you look like a fool. Call it what it is, "stonewalling to keep their child pimping business going."

Keep the dramatics to yourself.

Censoriship is as censorship does.

Censorship is suppressing or deleting anything objectionable just because it is objectionable. Most leftists understand that when the government hides information people need to make informed decisions about their lives and communities it is called censorship.

The next step, the one far fewer leftists in the US take, is understanding that corporations rule our goverment and control what information we have access to, especially regarding such things as profiting from organized rape and human slavery.

You seem to want to keep "censorship" a government-only thing and "stonewalling" a business thing, but the sort of fascism we face is precisely that we do not have a real separation between government and business.

Hiding the truth to cover your rape-profitting ass is censorship of the information people need to make decisions; stonewalling is but a delay relaying such info. Big differences between 'delayed' and 'never gonna let you know at all if possible'.
