Australian Beauty Facing Indonesian Firing Squad
15 Apr 2005
Schapelle Corby: Schapelle Corby, a 27-year-old Australian, faces a maximum punishment of death by firing squad after 4.1 kg of cannabis were found inside her unlocked bodyboard bag at Bali airport last October. Schapelle is believed to have been an innocent victim in an Australian domestic drug smuggling racket between Sydney and Brisbane. The criminals however, did not remove the drugs in Brisbane according to the plan and Schapelle, unbeknown to her, arrived in Bali with drugs that had been planted in her bag along the way.

PLEASE JOIN PETITION TO BRING HER HOME.

Schapelle Corby is due to have a verdict in mid-May. If found guilty in Indonesia of drug trafficking, she will most likely face the Indonesian firing squad a short time afterwards.

According to The Age "Corby's lawyers revealed an unidentified man had come forward and signed a statement naming three baggage handlers he says planted the drugs in Corby's unlocked boogie board bag.

Chief lawyer Lely Sri Rahaya Lubis said the three baggage handlers had since been jailed in Australia, while the man who made the statement was also in prison.

But Lely admitted it would be difficult to bring the man to Bali to testify, as he was a prisoner in Australia."

That is just plain wrong. It must be nice to know that your citizen's lives are spared when travelling the rest of the 'Free World', as you hand out shotgun-ingnorant-justice to people with plants. Australia should impose it's economic will upon that region to bring her back.

At a time when the rest of the world rushes to aide of your neighbours, I'm glad that you've found a way sustain that 17th century thinking. This is 2005! What's next, beheading for traffic violations?

Thank goodness this tragic story is finally finding its way to the US. I visited Australia recently where it remains front page news. No question that Indonesia has found itself in a difficult position, especially considering that Australia has readily come to its aid after the tsunami and recent earthquake. As for the rest of us as travellers...in response to 911, we now must keep our checked-in luggage unlocked so it can be inspected - how can anyone protect themselves from such crimes being conducted by the baggage handlers who are supposed to be trustworthy??

This is horrible--but why the need to specify that she's a "beauty"? Would this be less horrible somehow if she was ugly?

Hmm, just followed the links and this campaign in the US seems to be spear-headed by a right-wing group--Gabrielle Reilley is a right-wing "spokesmodel", with her own website, although it's rumored that others actually do her writing for her. Not that people shouldn't sign the petition--ocassionally people on the right get something correct--but just thought I would give people a heads up.

It's obvious this is a set up. Nobody trie's to bring that amount of dope into Bali. It's not worth two bob there. The indonesian's wanted to "get" an aussie no matter whether he/she is innocent. Shame on the Australian government for giving $1 billion in aid. Indonesia is the most corrupt country in the world. Let's spend OUR money on our own people and our own problems.

I'm not sure you people know what "Independent" means! See also "journalism". You should be ashamed of yourselves.

1) Aussie "beauty"?

Isn't beauty a subjective thing? And, is it more sad when a beautiful person faces death than when an ugly person faces death?

Also, Indonesians get the death penalty for smuggling drugs all the time. When did you last report on them?

2) Linking to a petition to save her?

That's not journalism, that's activism.

3) " Schapelle is believed to have been an innocent victim"

By who? By you? Why, were you there when she packed her bags? That's her story. Your job is to report the facts, not run her defense for her.

Here are the facts:

* there were drugs in her bag

* Indonesia has the death penalty for smuggling drugs

* she says she's innocent

For those of you who have singled out the use of the word 'beauty' from the title of the story, it should be noted that this girl is a beauty STUDENT. For some reason, and this can be documented on other websites, the word student was left out on this article's headline. There are many news stories on Google news or the Guardian that describe this girl as a beauty student, her being beautiful is merely a coincidence. Even if she were ugly she still deserves to be treated like a human being.
