Strange Bedfellows: Rightist Purge on Arlo Guthrie's Web Site
24 Oct 2001
Modified: 26 Oct 2001
Arlo Guthrie sang Alice's Restaurant, a hit song about the military draft, and he became a symbol of the sixties' anti-war movement. Today, anti-war sentiments are discouraged on Arlo's official Web site.
Few people are more synonomous with the Viet Nam era than Arlo Guthie, whose anti-war, anti-draft folk song "Alice's Restaurant" became a big hit and a movie. It put a town on the map, and immortalized a church which still houses the Guthrie Center today.

One would expect Arlo Guthrie's official web site, at, to be an island of tolerance and understanding on the Internet. One would be wrong. Since the September 11 attack, the webmaster has revealed himself as a pro-war conservative, and several users offering anti-war or anti-bush viewpoints have been dragged by other conservatives into personal name calling.

Things came to a head on Monday, October 22, when the webmaster posted a "funny joke" about how to educate "peace activists" by punching them repeatedly in the nose.

When a few users posted replies that indicated they were most definitely not laughing, they were viciously and personally attacked by the more conservative group. One user summed it all up with the amazing statement that, [loosely paraphrased] "A lot of people are getting tired of this 'dissent crowd' and its continuous opposition to everything." Several users have consequently left the site, some more quietly than others, but all presumably never to return. The far right now controls Arlo Guthrie's official web site.

While Arlo was not available for comment, one wonders if Woody is turning in his grave. Strange bedfellows, indeed.

I went to check this out and there was nothing there. Just the usual tour schedules and reviews and stuff you'd expect at a music site.

There was some kind of announcement I didn't really understand, but it sounded like the discussion forum had been moved to another server so people wouldn't confuse it with something Arlo would run.
