Workers of the World Unite!
01 Nov 2001
On 9 November, the ministerial meeting of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) opens. We have chosen this day to launch the first ever Global Unions Day of Action. Through world-wide actions we can make ourselves heard! That is why Global Unions are calling for action on November 9 at our workplaces and in our communities all around the world.

The Global Unions Day of Action aims to demonstrate the determination of the trade union movement to stop destructive globalisation where comparative advantage is sought and gained through the violation of fundamental workers' rights.

The call is therefore for a new kind of globalisation.

We support a globalisation underpinned by solidarity and justice, not one that undermines the values and working and living conditions of the workers of the world and their communities. We seek a globalisation where expanding trade and investment means expanding justice and opportunity. The theme of the Day of Action will be "Making Globalisation Work for People".

A set of common demands will form the basic demands of the Day of Action.

We want a globalisation that:

advances workers' rights and job security
supports quality universal education and health care
helps the poor, not just the rich
is open and democratic
benefits all people everywhere
delivers true global justice and equality
Representatives of Global Unions will be in Qatar on the Day of Action. We will makethe case to the governments participating in the WTO Ministerial Conference. Efforts atthe national level around the world will attract attention and strengthen the impact ofthe arguments we make.
