update on arrestees from counter-recruitment protest
21 Jun 2005
I got an e-mail from a friend updating me on the status of those arrested during the counter-recruitment protest on the Cambridge Common, whom the arraigning judge jokingly referred to as the "Cambridge 7". They were assigned a trial date of July 15. The three arrested at the beginning are charged with unlawful assembly, for which they could be fined. The four street theater folks arrested later are being charged with disturbing the peace, for which they could be jailed, which is--needless to say--rather serious.

Great! We'll be there to support the judge, the Cambridge PD and the great people that were offended by these clowns!

Matt,

Thanks for the update. I assume that the case will be heard at Middlesex County Courthouse on Thorndike St? If you hear when the theater folks are scheduled, please let us know. Tnx. -r

Oops--it's the 15th. The 17th is a typo (which I went in and fixed in the original body.)

Justice will be served and those seven clowns will get what they earned. Hats off to the Cambridge Police for providing the wonderful and professional police presence at the Army's Birthday Celebration.

Matt Williams Twisting IMC Policy
26 Jun 2005
Williams hid this article because I used the word "Miscreants." He said this was insulting. When he did this, he violated the IMC hide policy which is to only hide posts if they are exclusively insulting and contain no political or topic related opinion or fact but are there ONLY to insult.

This is yet another case of Williams broadly interpreting the censorship policy to keep disagreement of the articles he feels he owns.

Is the IMC really a news service? Is the posting process really open? The answer to these two questions is no. This is clearly evidenced by specifically MATT WILLIAMS tendency to preempt discussion using his singularly broad interpretation of the guidelines.

"As a witness to this event who took photos, I will gladly testify that these miscreants were forcibly ejected from the event, and then forcibly broke into the event and were THEN arrested. I saw it with my own eyes. "
Correction
26 Jun 2005
The use of the term 'miscreants' is not specifically insulting. It is simply a free spoken opinion about a value judgement on the motive of those who broke into the event and tried to disrupt it. It is severely ironic that IMC was at the event to photograph these disrupters and now overreacts to what they consider to be disruptions of their coverage of this attempted disruption.

I propose that if Matt Williams really wants to post flamebait to this site, and wants to oppress those who respond to it, that the IMC limit him to being a poster, or that Matt constrain himself to an ethical even exchange of ideas. Otherwise he is, and IMC is just endorsing another Bill Reilly.

Check out the new editorial policy. It now says that we reserve the right to hide posts that are "Personal attacks or insults" with no qualifications. Under this policy, any post that contains a personal attack or insult can be hidden. The policy was indeed my suggestion (made with the hope of promoting more civility on this site), but we talked about it and agreed on it as a group in a meeting. We're seeing how it works and may revert back to the old policy if it doesn't seem like this one works well. In any case, I see your point about the use of the term "miscreant" and admit that I may have overreacted with this particular post. You have to admit you were walking a fine line on that one though.
I didn't realize.

I am very sorry. I will do my best to satisfy your speech requirements in the future.

Mr. Big, your message is back up and Matt W replied to you civilly. Now let it go. You're not being done an injustice.

I've finally gotten more information on which court house it is--the Cambridge courthouse/Middlesex courthouse near the Lechmere Stop. I'm also told that there is not set time for the trial--the arrestees just have to show up at 9:00 and wait until they get to them.
