Wakefield action against BeNOW's recruitment database
19 Aug 2005
Because BeNOW is processing 30 million young people's names in order to recruit them for a war based on lies. Because BeNOW is another corporation supporting the war in Iraq and we won't stand for it. Because we want people in Wakefield to know about this company, stationed in their own town.
Dear all,

Below are the final details regarding the Wakefield
action against BeNOW August 19-20.

WHO: Organizers from Boston Mobilization, Northshore
Coalition for Peace and Justice, Merrimack Valley
People for Peace, Dorchester People for
Peace, Socialist Alternative, Lexington Committee for
Peace and Justice, and other peace organizations.

WHAT: Flyer and petition in Wakefield to organize
Wakefield residents to protest BeNOW's contract with
the Pentagon.

WHEN and WHERE:

Coordinator: Linda Schiffman, (781) 863-8672,

Peace and Justice,
jmullenus (at) aol.com
*Parking: North Ave. where it hits Lakeside Ave.
e-mail Janet for more detailed directions.
Meet Janet at 10 am. Questions, contact Janet.

**We'd like people to commit to 2-hour shifts.(longer
if you feel so inclined!) Please e-mail the
coordinator which hours you can commit on the
designated day. Thank you!**

WHY?
Because BeNOW is processing 30 million young people's names in order to recruit them for a war based on lies. Because BeNOW is another corporation supporting the war in Iraq and we won't stand for it. Because we want people in Wakefield to know about this company, stationed in their own town.

We also have a press coordinator, Jennifer Horan,
jenniferhoran (at) hotmail.com. She will be contacting
local media about the petitioning event.

We will be providing the flyers, petitions, and
posters. All you need to do is show up on the 19th or
the 20th!

See you all soon,

Annie McShiras, Boston Mobilization

So how did it go?
Semantics Issue
20 Aug 2005
Would it be cool with people to stop referring to passive events like this, like protests, like street theater or any of the other forumalitic liberal things as "Actions" or "Direct Action".

Not that this doesn't have a place, or that i don't support it. But i have noticed that people love to throw those terms around, and i feel that it is important to distinguish between symbolic protest, info spreading and things to draw attention AND actual monekywrenching, direct action, strikes, directly interrupting the operation of whatever you are opposing.

Just food for thought.

sadly Everything good gets co opted. there was a photo in the paper of some high powered corporate lawyers and the caption said "so and so having an affinity group meeting" I almost blew chunks. Power and politics start with anthropology and inserts themselfs into what people traditional do and say.
Thank you dritz for not surrendering your language and its meanings. thanks for speaking out.

the other side is that the increase in domestic repression premathed by manufactured terror means that almost any acticist enganging in organizing should understand that theres the serious possibility of real consequences for thier work and should be preparing for that.
