Don't Speak to Me About post-punk
by derek garcia
Don't speak to me about post-Rosa Parks.
Speak to me about post-modernism, or about post-Bush, or about post-World War II Germany, ... but do not speak to me about post-Rosa Parks.
If we learned anything by now, maybe it should be: Rosa Parks never died.
If you are speaking to me about Post-Rosa Parks, then you must be claiming that racism is no longer a part of America, or the world. You are claiming she should be forgotten. You are claiming that what she sat for is history. You are claiming her notions are passe'.
Don't speak to me about Post-Jesus.
Speak to me about post-right-wing-hate-mongering Christianity, speak to me about post-Pat Robertson, speak to me about what it means to be a hypocritical bigot, but don't speak to me about post-Jesus.
If we learned anything by now, it should be: Jesus never died. Jesus is a person, an idea, and a word. Do people love one another as they love themselves? No? ... Then Jesus should not be forgotten.
Don't speak to me about post-punk.
Speak to me about post-capitalism, or post-communism, or post-materialism, but don't speak to me about post-punk.
If we learned anything by now, maybe it should be that punk will never die. Does it seem to you like the revolution happened? No?... Then punk isn't dead. Because punk is not a haircut, it is not a style of music, or a dirty looking jacket, or any type of fashion. Punk is an idea, beyond commodification.
If they have ears, let them hear. |
