Yellow Pages worker calls for unity and solidarity at Verizon Information Services strike support rally

About 100 telephone workers rallied at Verizon's New England headquarters in Boston on Dec. 1 to show support for Joe Pasquali, a striking VIS Telephone Account Executive and member of CWA Local 1118 from Albany, NY. The workers were members of IBEW Local 2222, CWA Local 1302, and CWA Local 1400.

Pasquali spoke passionately about the need for telephone workers to stick together. "Verizon has refused to bargain in good faith over our sales commission formulas, health care benefits, and other critical issues." said Pasquali. "We're fighting back to maintain the good paying jobs and benefits that support working families."

Pasquali is one of 300 employees of Verizon Information Services (VIS) who have been on strike over unfair labor practices since Oct. 31.

"The only way we've made progress in this company is by sticking together, said Myles Calvey, Business Manager of IBEW Local 2222. "It's worked in the past and it's working now. Just remember, one of the keys to our success is that telephone workers don't cross picket lines."

Other rally speakers included Kathy Casavant, Treasurer of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO,
Rich Rogers, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Greater Boston Central Labor Council and Jen Doe, an organizer with the community-labor coalition Jobs with Justice.

At the rally, union members contributed over $450 dollars to the VIS worker's strike fund and pledged thousands more.

The Dec. 1 rally in Boston was part of a nationwide effort by telephone workers to show solidarity with the VIS workers. In addition to the rally, technicians and other telephone workers put up informational picket lines at most Verizon facilities in the Boston area.

The strike currently involves union members at CWA locals 1118, 1122, and 1105. Thousands of other Yellow Pages employees have contracts that expire in the next two years.

As another striking member of 1118, I want to thank every one of our brothers and sisters in the Boston area who welcomed Joe so warmly and turned out to support striking yellow pages workers in New York State. Rest assured that you can count on us when you are in need of support as well.
