Bush Bullshits Nation - Corporate Media Applauds
30 Jan 2002
Modified: 09:18:37 PM
But historic accuracy was not the point of last night’s exercise in perception management and population control. Whatever “facts” were needed to fan the flames of American hysteria over the mantra of 9-11 could easily be manufactured
Washington, DC.- In his first State of the Union address before both houses of Congress, George W. Bush attempted to rally the nation to his so-called “War on Terrorism” by increasing public fears over alleged terrorist sleeper cells. Raising fears will, of course, allow the Bush Administration to continue curtailing civil rights at home and help consolidate their hold on power. Claiming that “the civilized world faces unprecedented dangers”, Bush painted an ominous picture of terror lurking in the shadows. Apparently the obvious fallacy of his statement was lost on the corporate media and assembled dignitaries, for no one thought to point out the nuclear brinkmanship of the Cold War that once threatened to wipe out most life on the planet.

But historic accuracy was not the point of last night’s exercise in perception management and population control. Whatever “facts” were needed to fan the flames of American hysteria over the mantra of 9-11 could easily be manufactured. Since attention to detail and fact are of little concern to the mainstream media, the administration and most members of congress can continue fabricating their curtain of deceit. Behind that rather thin veil lie the hegemonic foreign policies of Bush senior’s New World Order, developed after the fall of the Berlin Wall (http://www.zmag.org/chomsky/index.cfm), and more recent attempts by today’s military-industrial complex (read: corporate/government) to dictate policy to other nations and U.S. citizens while laying claim to their resources. In the early ‘90s the replacement of the “red menace” from previous decades with the boogieman of “terrorism” and “rogue states” was accurately predicted by honest political observers, academics, and artists (see Terry Gilliam’s film, “Brazil” for some intriguing domestic similarities).

Today, George W. Bush, most members of congress, and their corporate sponsors are adhering to the script line-for-line. Bush’s reference last night to “regimes and their terrorist allies, who constitute an axis of evil” is merely more of the same: fear-mongering and scapegoating, meant to obfuscate the corporate/government agenda of world domination which precipitated most of the terrorist acts in the first place.

In the hours following the State of the Union, talking heads at CNN, NPR, and the networks, along with the scribes of the status quo in the major dailies, rattle on about approval ratings and presidential appearances (all very questionable),while the real story of imperial power and the rise of theo-neo-fascism within the U.S. government goes unreported. God Bless America? God save us from ourselves!
