This site is dying, what happened?
10 Jan 2006
What is happening to this site? It was getting a decent amount of articles last fall, now it seems to be falling apart. Only four articles in all of December? One article so far this month?
I noticed the editing has been getting weird, and there's more of the really lame conspiracy articles on the site and also stuff in the local column that isn't local, but also a lot of folks who used to post here aren't anymore. What happened to Boston indymedia? Did people move away?

Maybe they got spooked (pun intended) when they found out for sure that there are Bush's spys checking up on them
Re: This site is dying, what happened?

Hi Perzhing! Glad to know you brought this up since it allows me to shamelessly promote the fact that the amount of articles you see on the site depends largely on how much the community is involved in participating in making their own media. So I encourage you to pick up your pen and give free reign to your radical inspiration!

You might also want to know that we have a Dispatch list where people share possible story ideas. I encourage writers to take a peek and see if there are any events/topics they'd like to write about:
http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/listinfo/boston-dispatch

Better still, sign up to the list!

But to answer your question, nope, the page's not dying. I think it's been slow due to the holidays (and finals!), but I also think we got "really" spoiled in the fall. In November there were 14 articles, in October 15. Busy bees.

Anywho, I look forward to seeing an article from your penmanship...

What are you talking about man? Just because there have only been a few articles worthy of the center column lately, doesn't mean this site's not running a ton of stories. Perhaps, you haven't been around for awhile.

Don't just complain, do something.
Re: This site is dying, what happened?
10 Jan 2006
I'm not really a writer, I just read the site once in a while and it's been dull lately. Seems like there's some people that used to write here that dropped off.
Re: This site is dying, what happened?
10 Jan 2006
I agree with both sides. Lots of good (and real stories) are not being mentioned yet the silly ones that are fiction are. Lets kick it up a notch and get some good quality news backed with credible intelligence on here!
Re: This site is dying, what happened?
10 Jan 2006
The Globe at least does not use profanity and has some semblance of intelligent and factual reporting.
Re: This site is dying, what happened?

Boston Herald gets my vote. Physically easier to read.............
Re: This site is dying, what happened?

Ditto!
Re: This site is dying, what happened?
10 Jan 2006
Actually, I *was* wondering where bryan and homefries been lately. I used to love their stuff...
I think the site has improved.
10 Jan 2006
There is a lot more good stuff on it than before.
Re: This site is dying, what happened?
10 Jan 2006
Homefries has great stuff. I always look forward to seeing her posts. And I disagree that this site has changed dramatically since last fall - unless you're talking about during the DNC. There were TONS of people posting to this site around the DNC, but that seems sortof inevitable since there were lots of people from elsewhere lookin at the local IMC for that event. I bet if we had another DNC-like event here we'd get another increase in local news reporting. Wish it weren't the case!
Re: This site is dying, what happened?
10 Jan 2006
Why was the following censored?:

""hey huh?

There was only one article in the local yesterday. one. you call that a ton? and quit telling me to do something, It's insulting. like you're blaming me for the site sucking. Nice way to keep the critics quiet. "Oh if our site sucks, it's because the people who complain aren't doing enough to fix it." I can go elsewhere for news. The globe has better coverage than you guys, it's fucking pathetic.""

Can't take criticism? Are these positive voices in other posts even real, or are they Boston IMC members shilling? If you edit out criticisms of your site, how can you be trusted to tell the truth in your articles or even about your organization?

Here here.........
Censorship and Dumb Comments Are Killing This Site.
11 Jan 2006
Too many childish comments. Not enough news worthy stories. NYC IMC blows this away.
Censorship is a big problem here.
Re: This site is dying, what happened?
11 Jan 2006
I agree that NY IMC has lots of action going on. One of our big priorities is to do more outreach to get more people involved. It's cool people read the news but we need more media people!
Re: This site is dying, what happened?
11 Jan 2006
Boston IMC is still pretty good and for the most part, imformative. The editing could be a little better, such as keeping opposing viewpoints out in the open as long as they aren't offensive or disruptive..
Re: This site is dying, what happened?
11 Jan 2006
Honestly, Pete's at the Gazette, yes. His experience w/indymedia allowed him to get a full-time job as a journalist. That actually happens often and there are at least 2 Indymedia people who now work with Democracy Now. Matt is taking an indefinite leave of abscence to finish his PhD, and he had put so much on Indymedia for so many years that he needed a break. Tim's still around although not as active as before; he's doing a lot of activist work with other groups and that's awesome in itself.

But yes, everyone knows that were conflicts in the BIMC that led people to drop off/take a break/you name it. I personally think it had been going on for a while (people dropping off) and that hopefully we're building a better/safer environment for everyone.

Ie, Flipside. He's not our enemy. I hid his comments because he was insulting people. We've mentioned many times to him that if he wrote articles with less derogatory comments, there would be no need to hide them.
Re: This site is dying, what happened?
11 Jan 2006
hmm. Pete's at the Gazette, yes I know that. Why doesn't he continue to post his gazette stories on indyemdia ike he did here:

http://boston.indymedia.org/feature/display/40738/index.php

And no, I don't know about the conflicts, the site has never really explained them. What was the nature of them? Flipside implied in that same now hidden post that you were involved. Were you? how?
Re: This site is dying, what happened?
11 Jan 2006
I have "played" flipside about 5 times.
Re: This site is dying, what happened?
11 Jan 2006
Pete's decision to post/not post on the site is his. Being that said, though, we usually don't repost articles that have been published somewhere else (with very few exceptions). That's what our Other Press section is for.

To answer your other question, there was a disintegration of my working relationship with Pete, but out of respect for him and other BIMC volunteers, that's all I can/will say about that.

I do think, though, that every volunteer organization should have a solid conflict resolution program to deal with conflicts that might arise. Because they always do. Most corporations deal with them by firing people. Consensus-based groups are supposed to deal w/them thru dialogue, but it's a tough learning process, needless to say...
IMHO Sofia and the rest are doing a great job.
11 Jan 2006
This website has improved greatly. Keep up the good work.
What do you mean "this site is dying?"
11 Jan 2006
I would say it is thriving. Maybe someone doesn't like the fact that it is thriving?
Re: This site is dying, what happened?
12 Jan 2006
Interesting...........
Causes of Death
12 Jan 2006
1. Who wants to post serious news and information about social justice to a site where the article comments are predominantly right-wing, crypto-fascist and racist trolls? The site editors, stuck in a liberal "free speech" straightjacket are allowing COINTELPRO-type scumbags to dominate the conversation.

2. The editors are hidebound by liberal/anarchist anticommunist dogmatism, and often fail to promote material to the center column because it doesn't jive with their mix of Makhno and Ted Kennedy.

3. The editors are flummoxed by an ultra-"localist" parochialism, since they live in a neo-mental-dark ages influenced by liberalism/anarchism which is blind to the reality that significant events in the class struggle anywhere are more impactful on the "locality" than the latest meaningless puff piece from United for a Fair Economy.

Support the socialist press!
Not all right-wing trolls are bad.
12 Jan 2006
If the right-wing trolls are not smearing individuals, I think they are more useful than negative. Often I just sit there, looking at their comments, when I realize there is no need to respond. Their comments argue against themselves.
Re: This site is dying, what happened?
12 Jan 2006
It's kinda the same with the indymedia people, their statements are rediculous on their face. Like "the site is thriving" when they have one article centered for January so far when things are happening all over the place.

I'm having trouble telling the troll methods from the indymedia member methods. Both of them make these statements that are untrue but hard to prove and designed to frustrate and end prroductive discussions.

Makes me feel like I'm a troll, because why keep coming back here just to talk about this thing that nobody's going to listen to anyway?
ultra-"localist" parochialism
12 Jan 2006
huh, that's interesting, trosky. From the right-hand articles that are there right now (and haven't been published somewhere else), what would you center?
I don't distinguish between center and right hand articles.
12 Jan 2006
The only thing placing an article in the center means to me is that the Boston IMC collective wants to draw attention to it. I read all of the article on the right hand side so I do not judge the site by what goes in the center.
Re: This site is dying, what happened?

"I'm having trouble telling the troll methods from the indymedia member methods."

Re: This site is dying, what happened?
12 Jan 2006
Hey Trotsky, I love how you put "liberal/anarchist" as if they're the same thing. Let's face it, if we did everything your way, there wouldn't be liberals, conservatives, greens, anarchists or anyone with a view other than those with the misconception that the USSR was some sort of social and political utopia on this site. Nothing like the working class according to Leon. Sorry, but I'd rather not die in a fucking commie jail, either.
Re: This site is dying, what happened?
13 Jan 2006
Hey, Chip,

Trots may have many problems, but thinking the Soviet Union was a utopia is hardly one of them.

Read a book before inserting foot in mouth. . .
Yo Trotski
14 Jan 2006
Where do you live, and how many IMC's do you post on, anyway?a google search shows your comments in NYC and San Diego, and you obviously love to spew on the Boston IMC. Is this your main hobby? Doesn't it get dull at times? Aren't there more useful things you could do to try to build the revolution you seem to want?
Re: This site is dying, what happened?
14 Jan 2006
I dunno about Twatsky, but I live in the Boston Area, post mainly to BIMC but syndicate nationwide any factual crap I discover about BAAM and NEFAC.

I post occasionally to NHIMC but that is owned by "Garden Gnome" and he prefers not to share.
It would be nice if someone put Flipside six feet under.
14 Jan 2006
He does some pretty gross things in his apartment, ranging from in front of the window jerking off to penis tricks.
Re: This site is dying, what happened?
18 Jan 2006
That's a lie. I don't even live on Easton St.
