Modified Ribbons Distributed Across Boston in Remembrance of Lives Lost in Iraq
21 Mar 2006
On Monday, March 20, 8 people rode their bikes all over Boston distributing modified "Support Your Troops" ribbons. Over 200 ribbons had been collected over the last two years. The ribbons were spray-painted black with the message "100,000 Dead" accompanied by a peace sign inscribed in white. "We wanted to show that for some people, life isn’t just 'business as usual': our Iraqi sisters and brothers are being killed everyday. The ribbon is also a popular symbol of comodified patriotism: we wanted to transform that into a somber reminder of the consequences of such blind national allegiance," said Alia, one of the distributors.

This action marks the third anniversary of the war in Iraq, a day which passed unnoticed in the minds of many American citizens. For those in Iraq, however, this is a much more difficult task: discovered bodies of slain civilians in Iraqi sands are a stark reminder of the realities of this occupation. This was a part of the Operation: Over campaign of direct action against the war.

Re: Ribbons Modified With Propaganda

good action with bad information that reinforces a big lie.

The US has been overtly and covertly, directly and indirectly killing iraqs non stop for over 50 years.

Just because the media packages it in "operations" or wars doesnt give you the right to ignore that americans have probably organized, executed or participated in the murders of over 2 million iraqs in my life time with many more on the way.

Do I really need to continue to explain the damage that spreading propaganda does to the struggle for justice?

This is a holocaust.

I wonder where they "collected" the 200 ribbons from? Gotta love it!

Iraqis are being murdered and you're modifying bumper stickers? How is this helping stop the war machine? Is there something more concrete we could be doing? It's great to be creative in our resistance, but it's a little insulting that this is considered to be a hot tactic.

I wonder, given that we cannot reverse the decision to go to war, don't we have an obligation to put that country back on track? Or, do we simply turn our backs on this? I don't believe that either option is optimal, but, walking away makes little sense.
