Modified: 09:46:08 PM
Between 5000--10,000 people attended a rally and march for immigrants rights in Boston on Monday , March 27. The rally was held in solidarity with similar marches across the US with 1 million marchers in Los Angeles on Saturday, March 25. The protests were intended to stop proposed legislation in Congress that would criminalize undocumented immigrants.

Great job here. Wish I heard about it so I could be there. Publicize more! Especially in the suburbs!

Wow!! 5,000-10,000 people and the pitiful anti-war march could only get 800 protesters. These pro-immigrant rights people obviously don't care about the Iraq war. Many of them probably support the war and have their family members killing Iraqis for the same government that wants to deport them and stop others from coming here.I saw so many American flags it made me want to say go back to where you came from.We don't need anymore military patriotic killers doing Bush's and Kerry's dirty work. These immigrants want to be loyal Americans waving the flag and supporting the war machine. Then I say to hell with you!

Civil rights for the 11+ million undocumented workers in this country are more important than ending the US occupation of Iraq. I was at both rallies and there are good reasons this one was better attended. It's very risky for someone who's off status in one way or another to take to the streets. You're just another paranoid racist if you're really outraged that poor, oppressed people are not prioritizing your pet cause over their safeties and livelihoods. Come out next time and tell them to go back "where they came from" and I'll knock most of your teeth out before you get to "from".

i think it's more than it's more important to oppose this legislation than to oppose the war (which for immigrants is definitely true). the reason the turnout for M18 was so low was because a lot of people have just stopped going to antiwar marches because they don't see them getting anywhere or doing anything. it's great that it's a public event that people can come to with their kids, but after doing it a whole lot before the war started and then doing it regularly during the war, with things only getting worse and worse, it's going to get to a point where no one will be willing to go out marching, because what's the point?

i think a better way for organizers to spend their time is to do the same kind of community organizing that the rosa parks committee did, but not towards building up to a march, instead towards building up a community of resistance. and at the same time, doing smaller actions, with much less planning and much less politics, even if it's handing out alternatives to the military to high school students as they leave school, or chalking in front of ROTC, but doing it regularly. i think if everyone spent the time and resources on stuff like this that they spent on building up to march 18, a hell of a lot more would have gotten accomplished.

protesting this legislation, on the other hand, requires marching i think. the senate is starting to debate it today, and all they have to do is pick up the paper to realize how incredible unpopular it's going to be. i think that's intimidating to a senator, especially for the ones that are running for re-election this year. it doesn't work the same with the war.

So this "they are patriotic idiots" person posted something on the center column article at http://boston.indymedia.org/feature/display/58865/index.php . I mostly replied on that thread--you can see my comments about 7 posts below the last set of pictures. The comments there weren't quite as vehement as here, but same general point.

And as I read it, I really have to wonder what this person's agenda is. Is it to end the war, or is it to stir shit up on Indymedia?

But let me just make one other comment here. To whoever you are, you comment that you saw so many American flags that it made you want to tell people to go back where they came from. In other words, you saw so many people with a symbol of US imperialism that you wanted to lean on your privilege and engage in US imperialism to people's faces. Do you realize how contradictory that is??

People use the flag for a lot of reasons. It's often used in immigrant rights demos as a defensive tactic because people are being accused of not belonging here! It does not mean that people support militarism. Can you understand that at all? Have you ever been in a situation where you were at risk and tried to protect yourself in a less-than-ideal way? Or are you so privileged that you've never been at risk?

And then there's the fact that I see a whole lot of peole who aren't holding flags. Yet you say, "These immigrants want to be loyal Americans waving the flag and supporting the war machine. Then I say to hell with you!"

There are term for generalizing about a large group of immigrants based on a simplistic interpretation of one behavior of some of them. Xenophobia ring any bells for you? Racism, perhaps?

Real nice.

Immigrants have the full panoply of rights that all American citizens enjoy. Illegal aliens have only those rights that we choose to give them. If I were in charge, their only rights would be the right to three hots and a cot, hard labor for 5 years on a chain gang and then a one way ticket back to their country of origin.
"@" post above is by some troll.

And another thing. They are not really immigrants, they are aliens. Furthermore, they are ILLEGAL aliens. Can you not understand this point?
Re: BOSTON IMMIGRANTS RIGHTS MARCH--photos

i'll agree to call myself an illegal alien if you agree your ancestors were genocidal money-hungry illegal aliens.
Re: BOSTON IMMIGRANTS RIGHTS MARCH--photos

Well that's a start. You can now either turn yourself in or go back to your country of origin.

"And another thing. They are not really immigrants, they are aliens. Furthermore, they are ILLEGAL aliens. Can you not understand this point?"

Do you bother reading or hearing the arguments of the people that disagree with you, or do you just have a talking point that you cut and paste on every forum you go to?

this "they are patriotic idiots" person is sad, lonely, and insame after a few years of carrying the same damn sign to every rally he can turn out for. Its so sad to see him spew the sae racism that he accuses others of. Self hating Jews are really really sad, and so are fellas married to or living with "ethnic" women who spew hate speech.. so Pitiful.
