New Yorker: Bush is planning a massive nuclear bombing campaign against Iran
08 Apr 2006
The former intelligence officials depict planning as "enormous," "hectic" and "operational".
"If we go[attack], the southern half of Iraq will light up like a candle"- US intelligence advisor.

Sat Apr 8, 2006

The administration of President George W. Bush is planning a massive bombing campaign against Iran, including use of bunker-buster nuclear bombs to destroy a key Iranian suspected nuclear weapons facility, The New Yorker magazine has reported in its April 17 issue.

The article by investigative journalist Seymour Hersh said that Bush and others in the White House have come to view Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as a potential Adolf Hitler.
"That's the name they're using," the report quoted a former senior intelligence official as saying.

A senior unnamed Pentagon adviser is quoted in the article as saying that "this White House believes that the only way to solve the problem is to change the power structure in Iran, and that means war."

I think this is both diversion leaking by the Administration as well as wishful thinking by the liberal New Yorker which would love Bush to launch another war so impeachment could proceed.

Love or hate Bush (or like me indifferent), Iran is a big place with very sophisticated people and military. The US military probably contains the smartest people in the US at its leadership levels. They are not happy about Bush's underpreparation for Iraq that has damaged millitary infrastructure and morale. They thus are not about to sign off on a major, and I mean major war against a nation that bluster aside has kept its hands off its neighbors . Ironically, Iran could be the US's most important ally in the Middle East against Sunni Arab extremism in the next generation. Good relations with Iran also are a way to get out of Iraq. The current anti-Iran campaign is irrational. Pakistan has the Bomb; so do India and Israel. Possession of the Bomb is not a problem. Use of It however might be dicey.

GWB: you do not, I repeat, do not want to piss the top brass off. You will be impeached and your party and the right wing will be cheering along with the liberals. (Lefties out there-GWB's fall in the polls has been primarily triggered by the disillusionment of Conservatives with Bush. He never had the Liberals.)
