11 Apr 2006

SGAC 008.jpg
There will be a demonstration at Worcester's Abbot Labs this Thursday to ask them to release their HIV/AIDS medicine Kaletra to people in countries where they cannot afford it.

Who: Clark University and St. Michael's Catholic in Vt. chapters of the Student Global AIDS Campaign. Co-sponsors include the Saints Francis & Therese Catholic Worker community.

What: An action/protest on Abbott Labs, 100 Research Drive, Worcester, Mass. We plan to dress in black and hold 40 cardboard cutouts in the shape of eggs (easter is approaching...). 39 of them will be black while 1 of them will be pink to represent the one million out of the 40 million people living with HIV/AIDS who have access to treatment.

We also plan to deliver little black plastic easter eggs in an easter basket with signed letters with our demands.

Where: Meet at Clark University (950 Main St., Worcester MA) at 1:15pm in Red Square (main quad). Meet at the Beechwood Hotel parking lot (next to Abbott lab [Google map]) at 2pm. If you would like to meet with others who are going please meet in the main square of Clark University at 1:15pm.

When: Thursday, April 13th, 2006

Why: Abbott Labs has invented an amazing AIDS/HIV medication called Kaletra. They have released it in the United States and it is helping to reduce the illnesses that HIV positive people encounter everyday. Nonetheless, they refuse to release this medication in the global south (where it is needed most) because people cannot afford it. However, they have started meeting our demands by registering the drug in South Africa, so we are winning! We just need more pressure to ensure our successes are increased!

a) What is the incentive going to be to produce AIDS meds if angry psychopaths are going to force them to give it away.

b) They won't force companies to give them away.

c) People with AIDS aren't going to boycott AIDS meds just because they aren't free. (It's a bluff).
FLIPSIDE, take a hike.

Someone could write a program to give more intelligent retorts than you do. For example, "People with AIDS aren't going to boycott AIDS meds just because they aren't free. (It's a bluff)." There is no threat of a boycott in the article.

"They won't force companies to give them away."
I see no mention of force in the article.

"What is the incentive going to be to produce AIDS meds if angry psychopaths are going to force them to give it away."
Again, no force is mentioned in the article. The demand is for "affordable" medications. Given the huge profit margins of pharmaceutical companies, demanding a reduction in prices is not unreasonable and is just the kind of thing a pharmaceutical should expect.

You are a knee-jerk spammer, FLIPSIDE.

"There is no threat of a boycott in the article."

Bullshit. Economic sanctioning by homosexuals is implied.

"I see no mention of force in the article."

Right Here: "We also plan to deliver little black plastic easter eggs in an easter basket with signed letters with our demands."

^ Threat of terrorism ^
^ hoax devices ^

Meeting in Red Square was a nice touch too.

" Given the huge profit margins of pharmaceutical companies, demanding a reduction in prices is not unreasonable."

There you go -- a person with no degree in biochemistry and no self discipline within a productive career -- laying claim to the 'huge profit margins' of an innovative company in which you make no useful contribution.

I saw this before. When I crashed a Marxist meeting at the Jackson Mann school, those thugs were right there slack jawed and unable to say how they would continue to innovate biopharmaceuticals once the commies destroy all businesses. They really don't know.

Listen here bucko: Trade some pharmaceutical stock and give the money away to people in Africa with AIDS. Otherwise, I can't take you seriously. You are just another dumbass being generous with other peoples' money.
Now I have no doubt FLIPSIDE is delusional

Do you ever read your own words. You make inferences that only a paranoid would make. You're out of your mind.
And yet,
11 Apr 2006
We have the author of this article and his rabid defenders laying claim to other peoples' money. Worthless claimants who will never make good on their grandiose pseudo-generosity by WORKING.

how about asking big pharma to take your advice too, and give up its massive taxpayer-funded research subsidies, tax breaks, colonization of indigenous genetic resources from around the world, and extortionist profits on top of all that? really dude, the people who pay to set these capitalists up should be getting *something* back for all these handouts. what should we be settling for- giving them a free leg up and getting nothing in return? jesus, the least they can do is let some poor people somewhere have access to lifesaving meds instead of denying them access just to protect the precious profits. this is a very, very mild step towards justice in the world- there is not even mention of confiscating assets of these corrupt and racist companies, or of arresting their executives for crimes against humanity.
as far as research outside a corporate infrastructure, what do you call los alamos, or lawrence livermore or sandia or nasa labs? cuba has one of the most advanced biomedical and pharmaceutical research setups anywhere and they certainly don't rely on private profits to reach their remarkable achievements. sounds like your perspective needs to be expanded a bit from its current closeted state: i'd recommend some naturally occuring smokable green pharmaceuticals for help with your problem (which are currently outlawed because they can't be patented and therefore can't produce profits for big pharma.)

Last I heard, Abbott was one of the members of the "health" care industry that makes Death Penalty drugs. Google around for more on this.
I'd rather use herbs, roots and poultices than go to Abbott for anything.
