There will be a coordinated 25 hr fast on the 5th May in remembrance of the 25th anniversary of the 1981 Hunger Strike in which we lost 10 brave soldiers in the fight for Political Status.

Chicago Hunger Strike Commemoration Committee are providing Sponsor Forms for those wishing to participate in the fast. We feel that in remembering the gallant men of 81 we can also bring attention to those men who are still imprisoned for their political beliefs and who 25yrs later still fight for the recognition as Political Prisoners and demand Political Status for their political actions.

Re: 25 HR Fast in Memory of the 1981 Hunger Strike by Irish Republican Prisoners

ALL HONOR TO THE MEMORY OF BOBBY SANDS, MP

This year marks the 25th Anniversary of the deaths of Bobby Sands and the 10 Irish Republican Freedom Fighters as a result of their hunger strikes against the British Occupation. Hunger strikes are a way, and justifiably so, of gaining the world’s attention to an injustice done to downtrodden and unequally matched people struggling against occupation. That was certainly the situation in the North at that time. Unfortunately there still is no peace in the North nor can there be until the bloody British Army gets out. That is the primary condition necessary before real peace will come. Nationalists, Republicans and Socialists may disagree on the political configurations of the future governments in Ireland but all can, and should, demand the end of the occupation. To really honor these heroes raise the demand- ALL BRITISH TROOPS OUT OF IRELAND (and get the hell out of Iraq while we are at it). And to honor James Connolly, Commandant, Irish Citizens Army, an earlier Irish martyr, let us fight for socialist solutions to the “Troubles”. Chocky Ar la.

The same people who scream about the Bu$h adminstration killing the innocent glorify these scum. I can see setting off bombs to take out members of the British Army, but when you set off car bombs outside of department stores in London durring the Christmas shopping season, killing mostly women and children, you ARE a sctum bag terrorist. Nothing more, nothing less. In Ireland today, the IRA boders on being organized crime, preying on its own people. And yes, I'm an of Irish ancestry ( County Antrim) and still have cousins there.

How do people who give money know your actually fasting? given the fact that one group involved - the ifc of chicago- were involved in the theft of money raised for prisoners, i wouldnt waste my money on this. trust has been broken.
I.R.A.'s "Holy" War! For What? (10 lives?)
22 Apr 2006
I.R.A. and its foes are murderers. Just like the assinine occupation of Iraq. And Sudan, Soloman Islands, Kashmir, etc.
What the hunger strike proved was irrelavent. MONEY changed the whole picture.
By the way? Isn't Manuel Norigea a political prisoner? Where's the fasting for him? (He did let the CIA smuggle coke through Panama. While Dubya's daddy oversaw the crimes.)
Bottom line?
Live to fight another day.

Tim Finnegan lived in Walkin Street,
A gentle Irishman mighty odd
He had a brogue both rich and sweet,
An' to rise in the world he carried a hod
You see he'd a sort of a tipplers way
but for the love for the liquor poor Tim was born
To help him on his way each day,
he'd a drop of the craythur every morn

Whack fol the dah now dance to yer partner
round the flure yer trotters shake
Bend an ear to the truth they tell ye,
we had lots of fun at Finnegan's Wake

One morning Tim got rather full,
his head felt heavy which made him shake
Fell from a ladder and he broke his skull, and
they carried him home his corpse to wake
Rolled him up in a nice clean sheet,
and laid him out upon the bed
A bottle of whiskey at his feet
and a barrel of porter at his head

His friends assembled at the wake,
and Widow Finnegan called for lunch
First she brought in tay and cake,
then pipes, tobacco and whiskey punch
Biddy O'Brien began to cry,
"Such a nice clean corpse, did you ever see,
Tim, auvreem! O, why did you die?",
"Will ye hould your gob?" said Paddy McGee

Then Maggie O'Connor took up the cry,
"O Biddy" says she "you're wrong, I'm sure"
Biddy gave her a belt in the gob
and sent her sprawling on the floor
Then the war did soon engage,
t'was woman to woman and man to man
Shillelagh law was all the rage
and a row and a ruction soon began

Mickey Maloney ducked his head
when a bucket of whiskey flew at him
It missed, and falling on the bed,
the liquor scattered over Tim
Now the spirits new life gave the corpse, my joy!
Tim jumped like a Trojan from the bed
Cryin will ye walup each girl and boy,
t'underin' Jaysus, do ye think I'm dead?"
