I was shocked to see Amy Goodman, who is seen as a progressive media icon, at an event supporting a US/UN "intervention" in Sudan. She should have pointed out the United States' recent track record of "interventions" in Iraq, Kosovo, Somalia, etc. Sudan happens to be rich in oil! We should encourage and promote internal socutions to the conflict.

The International Socialist Orgnaization (ISO) makes some good points in their newspaper "Socialist Worker" about the "left" cover some are giving to another Imperialist military interverntion.
But in the past, in Afghanistan, the ISO supported the CIA organized Islamist Jihadists against the 'left' wing government backed by the Soviet Red Army. This was the only war in recorded history started over the issue of Women's Rights. The Islamiist used to throw acid in the faces of unveiled women at Kabul University. When the Red Army was in Kabul women walked the streets with high heels and mini-skirts. Half the University students were women. The CIA and the Islamists, and the ISO, won....women are relegated to isolation, oppression and the veil.
In Iran the ISO supported the Islamist takeover of the government. Their newspaper, Socialist Worker, proclaimed, "The form: Religious, the content: Revolutionary." The Islamic Revolution the ISO supported brought barbaric punishments, including death by stoning, meted out to women, homosexuals and others for “deviant” behavior. Hundreds of thousands of women have been driven into prostitution which, along with widespread drug addiction, has grown dramatically amid the economic and social devastation. According to the government’s own estimates, two million women are homeless, including many teenage girls who have run away from home.
In Algeria while the Islamists beheaded women who dared to go to the beach and swim with a two piece bathing suit the ISO cheered and called the Islamists 'anti-Imperialists.'
And now in Iraq, the ISO praises the 'Insurgents.'
Women have been forced back into veils, prohibited from wearing make-up or participating in public life under the recently imposed Islamic sharia law.
A street poster “decree of Allah” threatens, “We will have no pity for those who oppose Allah by their beauty or mode of dress”
Houses are raided where “sinners” are believed to be drinking alcohol or listening to music other than Koranic chants.
School kids with “indecent” haircuts are surrounded by mujahedin trucks, hauled off, beaten and shaved bald, dangerously branded as infidels.
Again and again the ISO provides 'left cover' for the most reactionary, women hating, Islamists.
At one anti-War demonstration in NYC the ISO contingent joined Islamists chanting "Allahu Akbar," to curry favor with "anti-Imperialist" Muslims.
Maybe they should change their name to Islamist Socialist Organization. Or, drope the 'socialist' and just call themselves ISLAMIST SUPPORT ORGANIZATION. |
