Urgent Action Alert!
The Upcoming Battle Against Anti-Immigrant Legislation, And A Call for A
National Immigrant Solidarity Movement

A Call From National Immigrant Solidarity Network
May 14, 2006

Next week will be a key moment in immigrant rights/civil rights work.

Tomorrow evening (Monday, 5/15), President Bush will deliver a prime time televised address, announcing the deployment of National Guard troops to the U.S-Mexico border. Also at some point in the next two weeks, U.S. Senate leaders are expected to approve parts of the so-called compromise immigrant legislation.

This is a critical moment for the immigrant struggle. Despite millions of people across the country on May 1st marching in the streets for immigrant rights, the right wing anti-immigrant forces in Congress and President Bush want to "talk tough on immigration."

We should brace ourselves for the ultimate showdown of the immigrant struggle soon, and we should mobilize ourselves quickly to respond to the racist anti-immigrant xenophobia that will go down.

We suggest organizing the following actions:

1) A local press conference, rally or vigil to denounce the racist anti-immigrant proposals from Congress and the President.

2) Legislative actions, including calling, writing and faxing your elected officials.

3) An emergency community meeting to strategize rapid response to a possible nationwide crackdown or attack on immigrants.

4) We are calling for multi-ethnic, broad-based national mobilization on Memorial Day weekend (5/27-29). Organize creative local actions against the possible passage of any anti-immigrant legislation and further government-sponsored immigrant crackdowns.

We urge you to support the Nine Points for Immigrant Rights, proposed by the Los Angeles March 25th Coalition:

- No to the anti-immigrant HR4437 and any other "copycat" legislation from Congress
- No to militarization of the border
- No to criminalization of immigrant communities
- No to the planned immigrant crackdown across the country
- No to the guest worker program

- Yes to amnesty for undocumented immigrants
- Yes to immigrant family reunification
- Yes to a humane path to citizenship
- Yes to labor rights and living wages for all workers

On May 1st, we showed the world that our force, our strength and our voice cannot be silenced from this moment on! This is the birth of a new civil rights movement for the 21st century, and we will fight for our demands until we prevail.

United We'll Win! Together We'll Achieve Our Dreams!

the true 'illegals' are the ones making these racist laws, like the europeans before them who tried to keep out the irish and italians because they were worried about the nation's alleged identity being sullied. i don't remember anyone clamoring about the illegality of the pilgrims' invasion. actually those people who did were massacred and their leader's head hung on a pike. maybe that's what 'fair play' means.

getting rid of all borders seems like the most agreeable solution to this problem.

Immigrant Community to Rally in Response to Bush Speech

Wednesday, May 17, 2006, 4:00 PM

Boston Common, Parkman Bandstand

Thousands of immigrants, refugees and their allies from across Massachusetts

This evening President Bush will deliver a prime-time speech regarding immigration reform during which he will presumably unveil plans to place National Guard troops along the U.S.-Mexico border in addition to endorsing a complicated, multi-tiered legalization program.

The Massachusetts immigrant and refugee community will respond on May 17th to this ever-darkening debate by laying over 300 wooden crosses in the Boston Common as a symbol of the ever growing number of deaths that have occurred on our borders because of our broken immigration system . The crosses will also symbolize countless future deaths that will undoubtedly occur with the militarization of the border.

In addition, community delegations will meet with representatives of Senators Kennedy and Kerry earlier in the day to urge them to support a comprehensive legislation that allows all undocumented immigrants the opportunity to get in line for citizenship, and creates increased opportunities for legal immigration.

“By advocating for the militarization of our southern border, President Bush has lost sight of the human tragedy that is caused by our broken immigration system,” said Ali Noorani, executive director of the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition. “The armed troops, draconian enforcement measures and severely complicated legalization schemes that are the compromise of the day in Washington DC will only tear apart our communities and weaken our nation. Senator Kennedy has successfully moved this debate forward, and we have confidence in his leadership to usher a true immigration reform bill to the President’s desk.”
TO ADMINS: This is Independent Media? Why did you hide my response to this travesty?
16 May 2006
Just an arbitrary move to silence common sense? Why did you hide the THREE comments made by other readers here? Is this issue so weak that it cannot stand up to the common sensibilities of Americans. This movement is WRONG. It is promoting lawlessness, and it discriminates ab\gainst legal immigrants who have every right to protest their status or working conditions. But I suspect that they are quite satisfied as immigrants.

Illegal aliens are NOT immigrants. They are not legal residents and they are not authorized to be in this country. Their presence here is ILLEGAL.

Am I to believe that your Indymedia site does not allow rational dissent or discourse? There is nothing racist or violent in my message, yet I suspect you will hide it because it doesnt conform to your idea of Free Speech (HA!).

When you have become your own greatest enemy, you will always be defeated.
Letter to Mr Average American
16 May 2006
Recently large demonstrations have taken place across the country protesting the fact that Congress is finally addressing the issue of illegal immigration. Certain people are angry that the U.S. might protect its own borders, might make it harder to sneak into this country and once here, to stay indefinitely.

Let me see if I correctly understand the thinking behind these protests.

Let's say I break into your house. Let's say that when you discover me in your home you insist that I leave. But, I say, "I've made all the beds and washed the dishes and did the laundry and swept the floors: I've done all the things you don't like to do. I'm hard-working and honest ... except for that part where I broke into your house.

"According to the protestors, not only must you let me stay, you must add me to your family's insurance plan and provide other benefits for me and my family. My husband will do your yard work because he too is hard-working and honest ... except for that breaking in thing.

"If you try to call the police or force me out I will call my friends who will picket your house carrying signs that proclaim my right to be here. It's only fair, after all, because you have a nicer house than I do, and I'm just trying to better myself. I'm hard-working and honest .... ummmmm .... except for that breaking in thing.

"Besides. What a deal it is for me! I live in your house, contributing only a fraction of the cost of my keep, and there is nothing you can do about it without being accused of selfishness, prejudice and being anti-housebreaker!

Did I miss anything? Does this sound reasonable to you? If it does, grab a sign and go picket something. If this sounds insane to you call your senators and enlighten them because they are stumbling in the darkness right now and really need your help.

The borders must be sealed, illegal aliens deported and the rule of law applied. Enough is enough.

Keep the demos coming. Lots of Mexican and El Salvador flags please. Lots of signs in FOREIGN languages.

The Backlash will make Katrina a soft breeze.
In all fairness.....
17 May 2006
I do have to acknowledge the fact that it is the cronyism and profiteering greed which has caused this problem in the first place. It was our laizzsz faire attititude regarding our border policies with Mexico and the temptation to get things done with ridiculously (and illegally) low wages to workers. But it must STOP.

Im not for mass deportation or shooting illegals trying to enter, but denying people access to public programs and our schools can be easily accomplished through documentation....and a similar restriction to those WITHOUT said documentation. When was the last time you could get a refund for something you bought in a store without having the receipt? Think about that.

Immigration is what built America....illegal immigration is a CRIME under current US Law. I dont understand the purpose of the protests, and I think its misleading to call the participants "immigrants". Our Governor in California is an immigrant. Illegal aliens are not.
we are free because we think
17 May 2006
Kobe, your reasoning would hold if the laws had applied to everyone at all times. Throughout US history, certain immigrants were more welcomed than others. During the Reagan era, there was an amnesty for all immigrants welcoming into this land. The only reason why these people are "illegal" is because we have created a system that makes it hard for: a) for people to become legalized, b) for seasonal workers to work in farms with the worker's rights they deserved, c) fair trade rules (instead of free trade) to take place that will prevent Mexicans to become victims of poverty, d) a cut in military aid to oppressive governments (ie, El Salvador, Colombia, Guatemala) which would cut down what is essentially a flood of war refugees
Yo no mo illegal immigrants
17 May 2006
The immigration of the early 20th century occured in a much different society. You cannot compare then and now. The school systems also stressed assimilation (no ESOL or multicultural nonsense). While the Left reviles patriotism, it was the active promotion of patriotism that enabled assimilation to occur and provide a common culture. The Hispanic And some Asian immigrants can wall themselves off from English and Anglo-Saxon values that make up the crux of America. That was not so easy to do in the days before Telemundo and cheap flights back to El Salvador. Very few Russian, German or Italian immigrants made visits back to the old country at least until the family had been here for several generations and was assimilated and affluent.

The numbers are just overwhelming. Limit the numbers and allow controlled immigrationyes. But like every other culture America has the right to determine its own cultural identity. US immigration policy is ridiculously liberal compared with other nations.

excuse me, i'm NAFTA, and i have soemthing to say. I was passed to make a common market in north america, including mexico. it just so happens that Mexico exports people. Under NAFTA rules, "human resources" are protected from tariffs or other protectionist measures.

The illegals should therefore not be considered illegal--they are simply unaccounted resources to be sorted and controlled just like all the other drones.

The question on poor white america's mind right now should not be why are mexicans taking my job picking grapes or cleaning toilets, it should be why aren't there better jobs than that for me where I live? Why does all the money that goes to the government get spent on just a few insiders' projects? If we're going to tolerate pork barrel spending, can we at least make it worthwhile spending? Like on hospitals and schools instead of on more stupid wars?

On a happy note, we don't have to pay back the national debt because it was incurred illegaly, and that's a fact, not a threat. :)
