Justice for Janitors : Strike Bulletin #2

Welcome to the Justice for Janitors Strike Bulletin. If you’re receiving this message as a forward and would like to join our list, visit and sign the online Solidarity Pledge. Even if you’re on our email list, please, visit our website and sign our online pledge.

Today, negotiations continued between the janitors of SEIU 615 and the Boston cleaning contractors. The contractors have shown little movement in the face of the growing political and community support for the janitors. The union is still holding out for decent wages (most janitors currently earn about $39/night), affordable family health care (most janitors have no health care) and full-time job opportunities (75% of jobs are currently part time).

Last weekend…
This Saturday, August 31, the contract of 11,000 janitors throughout Boston expired. On Saturday morning 1,000 janitors gathered in Old West Church in Boston to authorize a strike, which means a strike could begin at any moment. According to the union, job actions and walk outs could start as early as tonight.

On Sunday, SEIU 615 members spoke about the Justice for Janitors Campaign in over 20 churches throughout the Greater Boston area as part of the “Labor in the Pulpit” program organized by the Massachusetts Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice and SEIU Local 615.

Take to the streets with the janitors tomorrow in the first major action since the contract expiration, and biggest one yet. Wednesday, September 4, starting at 3:30PM at the Park Street T Station.

As the contract has expired and a strike was overwhelmingly authorized, we expect increasingly negative responses from building owners and supervisors. In order to avoid victimization of workers demonstrating their support of the union, the union has requested volunteers to serve as neutral observers at buildings where actions will be taking place, both in downtown Boston and in Waltham. Volunteer to be a Community Observer tomorrow: RSVP us at 617-524-8778 or email bostonjwj (at)

In Boston: Meet a bit before the rally starts at 3:30PM by the “Community Observers” sign.

In Waltham: Meet at the Shell station on Totten Pond Rd. at 4pm, exit 27 off I-95/128. Call Lauren Jacobs at 617-834-8394 if you have trouble finding the group or arrive late.

Coming up…
Don’t miss the rally Wednesday! Also, the Community is putting together a Teach-in to take place on Thursday, where more planning on the community support strategy for the campaign will take place and students are organizing to mobilize student support for the campaign. See the calendar below for a listing of upcoming events and visit our website for the most recent media coverage and frequent updates, and to sign the Solidarity Pledge!
