The “five point alternative plan” for Iraq put forward last week by Joseph R. Biden, the ranking Democrat member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, can best be described as a proposal for a sectarian bloodbath. He has joined others in the US political establishment whose solution to the catastrophe in Iraq is to tear the country apart along ethno-religious lines and—providing they collaborate with Washington—put anti-democratic regimes in power over the population. |

An increasingly alarming trend towards militarization is becoming apparent in traditionally civilian areas of intelligence activity, as evidenced by the recent proposal of a senior military officer to head the CIA for the first time. One little-known Pentagon agency in particular has been quietly accumulating significant powers and funding ostensibly in the fight against terrorism, but has also been shown to be monitoring political dissent within the United States. Reminds me of Chile in the early years of the dictatorship, when the thugs in Washington and Santiago conspired together to advance the sacred free market at the cost of rampant torture, murder and extermination of basic freedoms... |
