"Iron Ladies of Liberia" documentary screening and discussion
Friday, February 22nd
7:00pm, Free

She's already overcome tremendous obstacles to become the first woman ever elected president in Africa—now all she has to do is turn around Liberia — a country devastated by unemployment, debt, corruption, and the legacy of civil war. Follow Ellen Sirleaf Johnson through her first year in office as she faces angry mobs, ambitious political rivals, and high-ranking members of the international community. Her story is inspiring a new generation of leaders in Africa and around the world.

Our film will be followed by an informal discussion. Free popcorn provided!

"After the fall of the Berlin Wall, capitalism let its mask fall. Capitalism did not have to be social any more since socialism did not exist any longer as a counter-movement..Most economic leaders act irresponsibly toward Europe's people and the future."

The Republican Candidate (4)
18 Feb 2008
Che_5.jpgIf this is a subject of interest to you, in the United States today there are five Cuban prisoners, separated one from the other by thousands of miles. They have no area that can be sarcastically called the “Hanoi Hilton”. Their suffering and the injustice of which they are victims will be known the world over; don't doubt it for a minute

Be clear on who you need to fight:
18 Feb 2008
"The neoconservatives often get the whole of the blame for the unfolding disaster in Iraq, but the reality is that they couldn't have pulled it off all by themselves: they needed, sought, and got the support of the liberals.

Have liberals learned their lesson? Not if calls for intervention in Darfur or Kenya can be taken seriously. Iran and Pakistan loom large as potential sites of future U.S. military action, but I doubt whether we can count on opposition from the liberal wing of the Democratic Party, either in Congress or as represented among the pundits. The neocon-liberal popular front lives on and is bound to be an endless source of schemes for yet more overseas wars in which we have no national interest."

Dear Americans by Helmut Schmidt
18 Feb 2008
Will Americ a stop consuming a large share of the savings and capital formation of other nations? The trust of Europeans in American leadership is shaken today. We want to love America again. But we are skeptical because Washington seems focused only on troops and finances.

Sing-Along for Justice
17 Feb 2008
Are you looking for like-minded progressives to hang out with in Boston? Want to cross-promote your events and campaigns? Are you new to the area and looking for groups to get involved in? Are you psyched about building strong cross-issue coalitions?
Join Socializing for Justice at Jacob Wirth's for Sing-Along for Justice with pianist Mel Stiller on Friday, February 29th (Leap-Year Day!) at 7:30PM

No program. No speaker. Just arrive and enjoy yourself.

RSVP (required for dinner reservations) at - newcomers always welcome!

Sing-alongs at this piano bar have been a Boston tradition since 1988. The emphasis is on rock/oldies from the 50's, 60's, and 70's, with plenty of show tunes and standards, too. Stop by and see why so many people have said that Friday night at Jake's is the most fun they've had in Boston. Of course, there are also all kinds of domestic and imported beers on draft, and the Jacob Wirth dinner menu to enjoy.

At SoJust events you can hang out with friends, make new ones, find a date, get the scoop on a job, and find out what's going on this weekend - political or social. And the best part is that SoJust members share your vision of building a more just world.

If you're involved with a group or project and want to spread the word bring flyers to share - and there'll be lots of opportunity to schmooze and network in between songs.

Jacob Wirth's is at 31 Stuart Street in the Theatre District - near the Chinatown T Stop on the Orange Line and the Boylston T Stop on the Green Line.

Fee: $2 to cover group expenses.

From our FAQs:
"It's not very easy for me to meet new people and I'm not really one for small talk in bars."
We hear you. That's why at SoJust events, in addition to traditional name tags, we have "Ask Me About" and "Looking For" tags. That way you can slap whatever you're into lately up on your shirt and wait for fellow SoJusters to approach you. These seem to do the trick of moving past the basic "where do you live? what do you do for work?" questions to conversations that lead to more substantial connections.

"What actually happens at events?"
You'll always be greeted by friendly folks who can help get you socializing, introduce you to people, and chat with you about questions or wishes. It's likely a few people will be there promoting their campaigns and issues (yes, SoJust welcomes that sort of behavior). At our bigger events, there's always a literature table to toss down flyers, postcards, and other paraphenalia about events around town. Most importantly, we can pretty much guarantee there will be someone there you've never met before. As one of our members said, "You are bringing together people who might never get together otherwise - if that ain't a step towards justice I don't know what is."
