Aug5th-12th Week of Action Against Corporate Involvement in I-69!
02 Aug 2005
For more than fifteen years resistance to the NAFTA superhighway, I-69, has stewed not just from within the foothills of Indiana, where it is to be built next, but across the nation as a whole. Everything from grassroots organizing to more militant actions has been employed, putting off it’s construction time and time again. But, as the signing of CAFTA and other free trade agreements becomes imminent, the focus of the planners of our economy has once again been placed upon the finalization of this project. As an integral element of globalization's infrastructure within the hemisphere, I-69 is bigger than just Indiana. If allowed to be completed, I-69 would connect with the Plan Puebla Panama -- a series of projects (highways, air and sea ports, etc) which would provide trade infrastructure throughout Mexico and Central America. Together, they would create a direct route stretching from Canada to the very tip of Meso-America, allowing for the more rapid transport of capital and goods while providing nothing but devastation to the communities left in their wake. In Indiana alone, hundreds of families will be relocated and more than 1100 acres of forest destroyed; that is to say nothing of the thousands of jobs that will doubtlessly be lost across the border. For Central and South America, this highway will lead only to further exploitation as companies continue to move their factories further south with the lessening of wages and labor standards.
