How is nighttime bombing of a village (when all the kids are sure to be home and tucked in bed) supposed to be “bringing democracy” to anybody? And what are these villagers supposed to do when armed Taliban fighters demand refuge in their houses? Turn them out and tell them to go away?

The line between useful and puritanical

The voluntary simplicity movement might be personally beneficial for individuals to relearn how to enjoy life without being completely sucked into the consumerist culture, it’s no substitute for effective change. It’s far too limited in scope to make much difference, in no small part because of the class privilege of people involved in it. She argues that it should be seen for what it is, an exercise in improving your own personal life, and should in no way make the people doing it feel self-satisfied about doing their part when what really needs to happen is massive social change to halt the degradation of our environment.

In other words, it’s not a movement. It’s a lifestyle choice.

Then I read these other two posts by Ezra and Echidne about the relationship between prevention and pleasure, or the strain between the two, particularly pronounced in American culture. Ezra points out that a lot of preventive care is downright pleasant now, and while he’s somewhat right, it does well to remember a lot of the examples he selects are weighted down with class privilege. By the standards of American puritanism, the well-off have proven they are deserving of minor pleasures, so it’s within our puritanical attitudes to allow the privileged to have Whole Foods

Israeli holiday protest at Boston Public Library- 2 Arrests

2 anti racist pro Palestine activists were arrested on the side walk in front of the boston public library tonight. Both were charged with disturbing the peace, tresspassing, and resisting arrest. Minutes before the arrests both activists were forced out of the public library by no less then 5 boston cops.
