"Support Our Troops," Or Support The Resistance? |
by Marta Rodriguez tsira (nospam) verizon.net (unverified) |

This article was written by Puerto Rican activist and member of New England Committee to Defend Palestine Marta Rodriguez. In this piece, Ms. Rodriguez questions the efficacy of the antiwar movement's troop friendly slogans in affecting the behavior of the American military in the places they occupy, or moving American public opinion from a position of support for occupation to one of rejection of such a policy. Ms. Rodriguez argues that the present approach of the antiwar movement makes what happens to the occupying troops take precedence over the war crimes they commit against occupied people, as well as the right of those people to rid themselves of those who violate their territories, lives, and sovereignty. |

|
May 1 was the date that George Bush dressed up like a soldier, flew onto the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln, and claimed credit for the conquering of Iraq. Since then the war in Iraq has only intensified. More U.S. soldiers have been killed or wounded since May 1 than during the invasion phase of the war. Nearly 10,000 soldiers have been evacuated from Iraq for wounds and other injuries. Tens of thousands of Iraqis have been killed. The May 1 anniversary will be marked by nationally coordinated activities - demostrations, rallies, teach-ins, and forums exposing the lies of the Bush administration in regards to Iraq, Palestine & Haiti. |
