Forget the isolated looters. The real villains of the New Orleans tragedy are the oil executives who have chosen this opportunity to gouge us all and put the nation’s economy at risk in order to rake in the bucks while the getting’s good
Ray Nagin on Wednesday, August 31 ordered 1,500 of his police to stop their rescue efforts and control "looting". Shotguns drawn and backed up by National Guard troops, the capitalist state has turned against the desperate survivors of Hurricane Katrina to protect its number one concern: the private property of business owners.
“Anarchy Disrupts US Storm Relief”claims the BBC. “Scenes of Anarchy in Super dome” declares CNN. “Anarchy in the streets”. But what's really going on in New Orleans? Whether or not the hurricane itself is the result of human actions is questionable, but what is clear is that the chaos and death in the Big Easy are anything but the result of anarchy.
There was no way to stop Hurricane Katrina, but the chaos, suffering and death that resulted from this storm WAS preventable. Why didn’t the government organize massive and systematic evacuation? Why weren’t the levees maintained? Why were so many people left to fend for themselves?
