El viernes en Auburn, California, tres activistas fueron arrestados cuando salÃÂan de un Kmart. El FBI dice que Eric McDavid, 28, de Foresthill, California, Zachary Jensen, 20, de Monroe, Wash., y Lauren Weiner, 20, de Philadelphia estaban comprando materiales para fabricar explosivos.
El dia de hoy se les informaron los cargos en su contra: "conspiracion para atacar propiedades con explosivos incendiarios", incluyendo el Servicio Forestal de Estados Unidos-Instituto de Genetica Forestal, y otras infraestructuras públicas y privadas. Por el momento no se ha fijado una fianza.
El FBI asegura que "la investigacion ... utilizó una fuente confidencial (FC) que estaba profundamente infiltrada en la célula en la que trabajaban los sospechosos. Esta FC ha trabajado para el FBI desde los primeros meses de 2004. El/Ella a aceptado testificar en la corte."
La fiscal tambien dijo que los sospechosos podrian darse a la fuga facilmente, porque ninguno de ellos tiene trabajo, y que tienen una mentalidad equivocada y peligrosa.
Earth Liberation Front es considerado un grupo de "terrorismo doméstico" en Estados Unidos (eco-terrorismo). Es uno de los grupos que encabezan las listas de "más buscados" por el FBI. |

UK: Small worker-run brothels proposed to deter exploitation of prostitutes |

The law on prostitution could be changed to allow small "worker-run" brothels involving two or three women so they can protect themselves, the government announced yesterday.
Home Office minister Fiona Mactaggart said she also wanted to replace the "ineffective" fine for soliciting with an intervention penalty that ensured prostitutes received help with drug or alcohol problems. She also intends to stop the women being branded a "common prostitute" by the courts on the grounds that the phrase is outdated and offensive.
The new strategy represents the first big overhaul of the laws surrounding prostitution in nearly 50 years. The Home Office estimates that 80,000 people are involved in the vice trade, with 95% of the women dependent on heroin or crack. |

...Those who pooh-pooh preparations to take military action against Iran, or question the likelihood because of targeting difficulties, fail to understand the Bush administration's policies and intent.

Lawsuits filed over domestic spying program |

NEW YORK - Civil liberties groups filed lawsuits in two cities Tuesday seeking to block President Bush’s domestic eavesdropping program, arguing the electronic surveillance of American citizens was unconstitutional.
The U.S. District Court lawsuits were filed in New York by the Center for Constitutional Rights and in Detroit by the American Civil Liberties Union.
The New York suit, filed on behalf of the center and individuals, names President Bush, the head of the National Security Agency, and the heads of the other major security agencies, challenging the NSA’s surveillance of persons within the United States without judicial approval or statutory authorization. |

WASHINGTON, Jan. 16 - In the anxious months after the Sept. 11 attacks, the National Security Agency began sending a steady stream of telephone numbers, e-mail addresses and names to the F.B.I. in search of terrorists. The stream soon became a flood, requiring hundreds of agents to check out thousands of tips a month.
But virtually all of them, current and former officials say, led to dead ends or innocent Americans.
F.B.I. officials repeatedly complained to the spy agency that the unfiltered information was swamping investigators. The spy agency was collecting much of the data by eavesdropping on some Americans' international communications and conducting computer searches of phone and Internet traffic. Some F.B.I. officials and prosecutors also thought the checks, which sometimes involved interviews by agents, were pointless intrusions on Americans' privacy. |

Gore: Bush is a Criminal |

Former Vice President Al Gore called on Monday for an independent counsel to investigate whether President George W. Bush broke the law in authorizing domestic eavesdropping without court approval.
U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales plans to testify in Senate hearings, expected next month, to give the administration's legal justification for the secret domestic eavesdropping operation.
"A special counsel should be immediately appointed by the attorney general to remedy the obvious conflict of interest that prevents him from investigating what many believe are serious violations of law by the president," Gore said in a speech to The American Constitution Society and The Liberty Coalition. |
