The FBI's witch hunt against activists continues, with two more charged with arson in the last 36 hours, both Cascadian environmentalists. Jonathon Paul, 39 [pictured], of Ashland and Suzanne Nicole "India" Savoie, 28, of Appelgate were both indicted for their alleged involvement in a 2001 firebombing at the offices of a Superior Lumber Mill in Glendale, OR, an action claimed by the Earth Liberation Front. |

The Bush administration on Wednesday asked a federal judge to order Google to turn over a broad range of material from its closely guarded databases.
The move is part of a government effort to revive an Internet child protection law struck down two years ago by the U.S. Supreme Court. The law was meant to punish online pornography sites that make their content accessible to minors. The government contends it needs the Google data to determine how often pornography shows up in online searches.
In court papers filed in U.S. District Court in San Jose, Justice Department lawyers revealed that Google has refused to comply with a subpoena issued last year for the records, which include a request for 1 million random Web addresses and records of all Google searches from any one-week period... |

Two Charged in Northwest "Ecoterror" Probe |

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) - Two people have been charged in a federal investigation of a string of Northwest arsons claimed by the shadowy radical groups Earth Liberation Front and Animal Liberation Front, authorities said Wednesday.
Jonathan Paul, 39, was arrested Tuesday on charges that he helped firebomb a horsemeat packing plant in Redmond, Ore., in 1997, said Diane Peterson, spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney's office in Portland.
Suzanne Savoie, 28, remained at large, Peterson said. She was charged with serving as a lookout for the 2001 firebombing of the offices of a lumber mill in Glendale, Ore.
Each suspect faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine... |

Report shows how right wing nut Alito will turn U.S. into a virtual East Germany
CHICAGO, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Judge Samuel Alito seems destined to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate to the Supreme Court of the United States in the coming weeks and will likely be faced with an assortment of major technology cases as a new justice, but legal experts tell UPI's The Web that as an appeals-court judge for the last 15 years his experience with technology cases has been quite limited.
Alito has been an appeals-court judge on the Third Circuit Court of Appeals in New Jersey and has heard one major copyright case and a number of contract cases involving technology companies like Nextel, but he has had no experience with patent cases, experts said. By Gene Koprowski |

INSIDER INFO: 6 Million Wiretapped Conversations Per Month |

In a quirk of fate, I met someone from IBM who was directly involved in implementing the wiretapping system that is all over the news. It is much worse than the news would suggest.
As some have reported, this is definitely not just NSA. The bidding for the technology to do this project was conducted by members of the FBI and the CIA. During the proposal process, IBM was told explicitly that they were to answer questions, not ask them.
One of the most noteworthy comments was that the Government had specified 60 Terabytes of monthly storage for digital versions of conversations. MONTHLY!
At about 11k per call, that is about 6 million conversations per month. (correct my math if you are better at computers!).
This is enormous.
People in the press are concerned that they are tapping the phones of people without just cause. What they are really doing is much, much worse.
In reality, they are tapping hundreds of thousands of lines all the time. This is KGB stuff.
Every call is stored digitally and indexed accurately, creating an archive that can be used for political purposes in the future. This is not reels of tape that would require massive effort to file through and might become useless quickly. It is highly indexed information that is being kept in storage. Two years from now, they could look into particular phone numbers to check in on cell and land lines.

They are running filters on every conversation for Farsi and other languages in real time
This is domestic spying on a massive scale, not just a few wiretaps without a judge. This should be cause for impeachment. |

Mining for Kids: Children Can't "Opt Out" of Pentagon Recruitment Database |

Parents cannot remove their children's names from a Pentagon database that includes highly personal information used to attract military recruits, the Vermont Guardian has learned.
The Pentagon has spent more than $70.5 million on market research, national advertising, website development, and management of the Joint Advertising Market Research and Studies (JAMRS) database a storehouse of questionable legality that includes the names and personal details of more than 30 million U.S. children and young people between the ages of 16 and 23.
The database is separate from information collected from schools that receive federal education money. The No Child Left Behind Act requires schools to report the names, addresses, and phone numbers of secondary school students to recruiters, but the law also specifies that parents or guardians may write a letter to the school asking that their children's names not be released.
However, many parents have reported being surprised that their children are contacted anyway, according to a San Francisco-based coalition called Leave My Child Alone (LMCA).

"Restricted Areas" Constitutional |

The Supreme Court has ruled that "designated protest zones" and their corollary, "restricted areas" (or, more accurately, designated conformity zones ), are perfectly Constitutional. Bostonians may recall the pens for protestors of the Democratic National Convention. We'll be spending a lot more time in them in the future.
Or will we? |
