Knowing the record of his own company, I can't help wondering whether Cheney is like an alcoholic seeking help, for during his five-year reign as CEO, Halliburton and its subsidiaries filed more than 150 separate court actions (documented by Halliburton Watch). Those lawsuits pursued injunctions, evictions, and attempted to collect alleged debts from other corporations and individuals, sometimes for as little as $1,500. |

Mosh could well be one of the most overtly political pop music videos ever produced, and is easily the most direct anti-Bush cultural statement since Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11. Although the video debuted just a week before the election, it could have an unprecedented cultural and political impact, coming from the top-grossing rap star in America, and one of the seminal pop icons of the last decade. |

Allawi blames US 'negligence' for massacre |

Iraq's interim prime minister, Ayad Allawi, said today that "negligence" by US-led forces brought about the massacre of 49 Iraqi soldiers and warned of further "terrorist acts".
"There was great negligence on the part of some coalition forces, " Mr Allawi told Iraq's national assembly. "It was a heinous crime where a group of national guards were targeted."
About 50 newly recruited Iraqi soldiers were found dead at the weekend after being ambushed at a bogus checkpoint between Balad Ruz and Qazaniya in Diyala province, 50 miles (80km) north-east of Baghdad.
A senior defence ministry official, Brigadier Salih Sarhan, said the soldiers - who were unarmed and wearing civilian clothing - "were ordered from their buses by men in police uniforms, told to lie face down on the ground, and then shot in the back of the head".
The men had just finished three weeks of training at the Kir Kush military base near the Iranian border, he added.
Mr Allawi said he will form an emergency investigative committee to look into the massacre and warned politicians that they "should expect an escalation in terrorist acts". |

Tap water linked to higher risk of stillbirths |

Chlorine which is used to disinfect tap water can contribute to an increased risk of having a stillborn baby, researchers have said. The chance is up to 21 per cent greater where pregnant women are drinking and washing in water laced with by-products of the chemical.
Experts believe there may also be a link with the birth of unusually small babies.
The study's authors, from Imperial College London, described their finding as 'significant' and called on UK water companies to restrict their use of chlorine to the minimum levels possible.
The researchers looked at birth statistics in three water company areas: United Utilities, covering the North-West of England; Severn Trent, which serves much of central England; and Northumbrian.
These were then cross-checked with information on the levels of trihalomethanes in the tap water. THMs are created when chlorine reacts with organic matter such as particles of plants or insects in the water.
The research paper concludes: "Our findings overall suggest a significant association of stillbirths with maternal residence in high THM exposure areas." |

Hundreds mourn loss of student killed by police during Red Sox celebrations |

EAST BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Hundreds of mourners paid their final respects Tuesday to a college student killed by a pepper-spray pellet fired by police during raucous celebrations after the Boston Red Sox won the American League pennant.
Friends, family and dignitaries -- including Gov. Mitt Romney, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and Boston Police Commissioner Kathleen O'Toole -- filed into St. John's Catholic church for the funeral Mass of Victoria E. Snelgrove.
In a eulogy marked by soft sobbing from among the roughly 500 mourners, the Rev. Wally Keymont criticized the rowdy fans whose behavior led to her death.
"Why did this have to happen?" he said. "I don't know why. Some people feel it's their God-given right to riot, to destroy property and cause mayhem. ... It is destructive and it is deadly.
"We need to be able to articulate our anger about this horrible death," the pastor said, "(but) we need not lose our faith because of it." |

Voter Fraud in Swing States |

These efforts are not isolated incidents, but part of the Republican Party's "Victory" programme. While ostensibly a voter registration and "get out the vote" operation, the programme includes a concerted nationwide effort by Republicans to lock in their electoral gains by any and all means necessary. Sounds like partisan rhetoric, sure, until you hear it from the source. Alluding to the fraud committed by his party in his home state of South Dakota, former Republican governor and congressman Bill Janklow told the Associated Press last week that the entire Victory programme is rife with electoral fraud: "These people are cheating. When you tamper with it, you cheat the system. And cheating in elections is the worst form of cancer because it's uncontrollable." |

Seven peace activists scheduled to go on trial in Vermont |

BRATTLEBORO, Vt. -- Seven peace activists are scheduled to go to trial this week for refusing to leave a Vermont Army National Guard recruiting headquarters.
The protesters were part of an anti-recruitment team called the Peace Guard when they staged their event in March 2003, just days before the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.
They each face a charge of trespassing, a misdemeanor carrying a maximum penalty of 90 days in jail or a $500 fine. Their trial before a jury is scheduled to begin Thursday.
"I thought it was an appropriate time to speak my opinion strongly," explained Betsy Williams of Putney, one of the activists arrested that day. "And I saw the recruiting office as a direct connection between my community and the military branch of the government."
Two days before the United States invaded Iraq to hunt for banned weapons, the protesters arranged a sit-in at the Vermont Army National Guard office in Brattleboro. The protesters sought to transform the recruitment center for the day by hanging up anti-recruitment signs displaying messages of peace. |

Food co-op in Montpelier pressed by growth |

MONTPELIER, Vt. -- The food cooperative in Montpelier is trying to figure out a way to accommodate its continued growth.
Annual sales at the Hunger Mountain Co-op are nearing $10 million and are steadily increasing, said Chairman Guido Mase.
But discussions about whether the co-op store should be expanded to accommodate the interest in shopping at the store, which features local and organic products among its mix, has been a difficult one.
Members of the co-op approved a $1.2 million expansion last year and then later rescinded the plan amid controversy.
Mase said now there is a general consensus among members that some type of growth needs to happen, though it does not have to be as drastic as last year's proposal, which many considered too costly and large. |
