Even in the unified ranks of the Boston antiwar group United for Justice With Peace, fault lines began to form recently when activists started discussing whether to protest at the Democratic National Convention next week.
"Some people feel very strongly that we should have anybody but [President] Bush. They don't want to somehow play into the Republicans' hands," said Cynthia Peters, a coalition organizer.

Anti-Media Terrorism at the DNC? |

Recent hype by the FBI concerning alleged "terrorist" attacks by a domestic group against media vehicles at the DNC protests led me to think, once again, about the role of the media in the debacle we know as the Bush Administration and its terrorist war against liberty, rights, Muslims and Arabs. While I suspect that the FBI's allegations are bogus and just another example of the paranoia they seek to provoke, I mused over another interpretation of the allegations. Since the word "terrorist" is often used by states as a term to smear freedom fighters, let's attempt to reverse engineer the FBI's PsyOps attempt with regard to their press release. |

Recent news about the possibilities of election delays have brought American's face to face with what we fear most-the end of democracy. Questions about such delays were prompted by Attorney General, John Ashcroft and Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Tom Ridge's announcement that Al Qaeda was planning on attacking the Democratic and Republican National Conventions. Since that time there has been a flurry of news and announcements that only serve to make things a little more confusing. To truly understand what is happening we must look at the facts. We must examine the words of those in power to see what they are trying to accomplish and compare that to what they have accomplished in the past.
We will start at the beginning, with Ridge's announcement and work forward from there. We will examine preparations for state sponsored violence in Boston and New York for the upcoming Democratic and Republican National Conventions, as well as briefly viewing the positions the Democrats and Republicans have taken. Finally, we will view the mechanisms and the real possibilities of delay or cancellation of the election.

Ohio University is offering "domestic-partner" benefits to employees, but only same-sex couples can apply.
Some critics say the school is setting itself up for a lawsuit by employees who want to add a live-in boyfriend or girlfriend to their insurance plans, the Athens, Ohio, News reported.
Eric Clift, a technical services specialist in OU's College of Osteopathic Medicine, told the paper if a heterosexual employee were to legally challenge the new policy as discriminatory, the university might have to either revoke the benefits for gay and lesbian employees, or extend them to straight employees, "which I have to think would (financially) cripple the benefits package at OU."
OU spokesperson Hub Burton responded to the criticism, explaining that in extending domestic-partner benefits only to same-sex couples, OU "chose to focus on those who don't have the right to get legally married. ... This is a matter of economic fairness."

Burton noted other schools have a similar policy, including Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, which announced its new domestic-partner benefits policy the same day as OU's announcement.
Clift, however, says the policy discriminates against heterosexual couples who don't want to get married.
"You're forcing heterosexuals to get married to get these benefits," he told the Athens News.
Burton said the school expects the added costs to be negligible, with an estimated 20 employees likely to sign up at a projected cost of between $50,000 and $100,000, the News reported.
Not all homosexual partners will receive the benefits.
The school defines domestic partners as individuals who are of the same sex, and share a regular and permanent residence, have a committed personal relationship, can demonstrate financial interdependence and who are not legally married or in another domestic partnership. Also, the couples must attest they have been together for at least six months.
